In some regions, a garden can be completely wiped out by slugs in one day. There are dozens of strategies for mitigating this problem, but this was the first time I saw a "slug moat"

Clever idea. Our garden was completely over run by a new type of slug this year. Maybe Portland has a similar infestation. We both had a wet cold Spring.
Slugs
The bane of the Willamette Valley.
This year was one of the worst.
One year we put out trays of beer. Works pretty darn good, but it's BEER!
Wife would go out early and stab their slimy guts one by one, but the swing shift crew had already done their damage.
I actually saw one coming outta the pool. It was quite early, but I swear I saw it toweling off and stretching it's optical tentacles.
That video is great, and those people need to be applauded.
They have gone after gardening with much thought and diligence. Bravo.
I'm not there, not gonna be there, but in my anemic endeavor to raise something other than a herd of slugs, I've put some thoughts together for next year. Did consider making tiny Concertina wire, but tiny razors were hard to come by. So thinking of making removable wire mesh walls....or teflon sheeting
