Title: Help with stairs
Post by: suburbancowboy on August 28, 2011, 09:48:44 PM
I will be getting the framing inspection done a week from tuesday.  I will also be working on the floor on the upstairs over this next long weekend.  I have the 1 1/2 story cabin.  I was planning on an L shaped set of stairs but haven't got anything in stone.  I would like to see some pictures of what the members have done and also any pict what it looked like half way through.  Also any plans would be great.  Going up and down a ladder is kind of a pain.

There are some photos on this page of my build thread of my stairs. Still not complete yet but may be of some help.

thanks dug.  How do you know how high to make the platform?  Half way up the distance from floor to ceiling?  Or is more based on what the upper stairs needs to be?

That's how I started the process. I forget now but I think I went with 10.5 inch run and 7.5 inch rise. Based on that I just figured out how many steps I could go with and still leave a 3 foot square for the landing. I then added up the total rise in those steps and subtracted it from the total floor to loft height and that was my landing height.

It took my feeble mind some time to get the exact figure because you have to consider the finished floor and tread depth into the calculation.

I wanted compact stairs in my 14' wide. original plans called for pull down. i want my dog with me upstairs, she can open doors, but not climb ladders:)
so I google stairs and found winder stairs to be the best solution for me. They work great and people think they look cool. he's a link to pics
