Title: Anxiety questions, lol
Post by: Crappie Slayer on March 08, 2011, 10:53:12 AM
I was just wondering if anyone has experienced any anxiety waiting to build.   I have land, I am just waiting on the weather to turn a lil better before I install my main support piers.

I have planned and drafted, and planned and drafted till I am blue in the face.  All the tools are in order, priced lumber,, got everything in order... Just waiting to get started.

Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions for occupying my time till I build.

This post may seem odd, or maybe even silly,,, I am sure that there is plenty I can do around the place, but I am new at the owner builder thing,,so.

Some of what I thought.

1.  Cut some wood for next winter.
2.  Build some chicken tractors.
3.  maybe start working on a small pond dam with the tractor.

Yeah, firewood. If you're planning to burn wood it needs to be split and stacked ASAP if it's to be dry enough by winter. Get a couple years ahead on the wood supply.

Addendum to my go catch a mess of crappie  ;D

Go to gym and start working out!   ;)  Tone up those muscles you never knew you had until you start building.  Oh my God that is sore.  Opps that hurt!  Wow I have to bend over again!  OH OH!!  Cant get up!

Alan's firewood is a great idea. You never can have enough!  Also saves on trips to the gym.  Pile it here then re-stack it over there.  Chain saw  equals mans best friend!

Firewood.  If you are in an area with wildfire risks several dispersed small piles are much better than one big pile. Not too close to buildings either

Ditto.  I am also anxiously awaiting for the dollars to pile up so I can buy property, put in infrastructure, build the house....  your lucky you have land to start working with  ;)

Is everything else on your to-do list taken care of?  By that I mean things that you normally take care of during the summer/fall months that maybe you can get a head start on, so you have more time to focus on the build?  Like making sure your vehicle is in top-notch condition, chainsaw is sharp, birthday presents are bought in advance, etc.

I'm VERY close to starting my homestead. I'm starting with a good-size barn, and then our last home (on earth). I've blown through a half a forest worth of paper designing and re-designing- there's no end to it! Soon, it will be time to put the plan into action and have at it. Ain't skeered- but I am excited!

Build a model.  Use as much detail as your patience/time will tolerate.

Anxiety? Not sure I'd call it that, but yeah... I'm ready to get out there and do some work.

Take the work you plan to do first and step through it in your head in painful detail - action by action. Write down every tool you'll need, every material you'll use, and every problem you might encounter. Best way to ensure you've got what you need, especially if you are doing something you've never done before.

The firewood is also a good idea...

Models are a good idea. For a quick-n-dirty model just to get a feel for the over-all look and space, you can get 1/4" paper-backed foam board at hobby stores or Staples. I build to 24:1, cut it with a razor knife, and assemble with a hot glue gun. I bought 1/24th scale dollhouse furniture on ebay. Yes, I'm a 57 year-old man, and I play with dolls! Despite all of the wonderful software out there, for me, there's nothing like an actual 3D model to get a feel for how it would 'live'.

Weather is no excuse! Get to work.  :)

I built my house in the rain, snow, wind and sunshine.  ;D
