Title: Hello Everyone
Post by: Crappie Slayer on February 28, 2011, 12:31:24 PM
I would like to introduce myself.  My name is Chris and I live in Oklahoma.  I plan to build a small home this year on 10 acres in rural oklahoma about 45 mins from Tulsa.

I would like to do the pier and beam construction method as most have used on here but I would like to run a couple of questions by some of you.

I am thinking of using steel pipe for my beams and 2x12s screwed together to form my floor girders that run the length of a 24x32 small house or cabin.

Please let me know what your thoughts are on this,,, I would think that 3   2x12's screwed together would be plenty strong enough to support just about anything... let me know what you guys think.  Of course I will include pictures when I break ground,,, thanks in advance... I have been a long time lurker and avid reader of posts,,, just signed up and look forward to sharing my adventure with all of you fine folks.

welcome!

never heard of a steel pipe beam before.  Unless you mean steel pipe posts? and 2x12 beams?

A scan or photo of a dimensioned drawing would help. A beam is a girder, by a different name.

3- 2x12's are approved to span 6 feet 10 inches in a 20 foot wide house.  I have seen a few people lately building over code on joists, and less than code on girders.  I assume in OK you don't have a building code to follow, but the ICC gives good guidance on sizing.  Also don't forget to try and make sure that the spots where the girder breaks should be over top of a post.

Yes the steel pipe would be for the peirs and the 3 2x12s would be for the beams,,, hope this helps a little better,, I will try to insert a drawing when I can.

Thank You

Welcome Chris,
With the Home being 24' wide, you would need a center beam and piers,.if you were to use Dimensional lumber (2x12) for floor joist, that span would exceed span tolerance.
I am building not to far outside tulsa also in Skiatook!
