Title: Math
Post by: StinkerBell on December 23, 2010, 03:17:29 PM
My headhurts....But I figured out. (roughly) that if I have 100sq ft or 14,400 inch2 of solar panels, that ='s
.35 kwh or 5040 watt hours per day for 5 kwh. At a cost of 5500.00 for panels, not including batteries, invertors or other fun stuff. I was hoping to achieve 10kwh for the future new cabin. Now to go to each appliance with kill-a-watt meter to see if this will work.

Then after that how many batteries I need for surges and sunless days.

Ok I can put my shoes back on, the counting has stopped for today.

So, does this sound right or am I way off?

To be completely off grid?

Forget about the sq inches, that makes my head hurt too. Start with the power required. The Kill-A-Watt is good for things already owned. The rest can be estimated by looking up watts used. (When I Kill-A-Watted several things I found some used noticably less than the power rating (my laptop for example). Nothing I tested used more than the label rating.

Once you have that data download the tool HERE (http://countryplans.com/smf/index.php?topic=8192.0).

And then ask questions about what doesn't make sense or is difficult to understand.

here is a good on-line calculator

it is not the square footage, per se, but the watts put out by the specific panel
