Financial Crisis

11minute 11 seconds

This makes sense to me.  No real answers in the end but the problem of crisis of capitalism is well 'illustrated' IMO

To find a solution, one must first define the problem.

Compared to what?? All the socialist success stories?  Every penny earned anywhere is earned through capitalism---it's just a matter of where.  Is capitalism open to the folks at the bottom, or just the highest government officials?  You don't see how the more we embrace socialism and forced re-distribution of wealth, the poorer we become as a nation?  How much more proof do you need?  Now wealth is reserved to the few that can manipulate the system.

For 2011 there are 19 30 countries ahead of the US in quality of life

oops ETA   should have blown up the fine print  -- old eyes aren't good at fine print

several of which are quite socialist.....but I am not advocating socialism

"The Quality of Life Index (QLI) is an attempt to quantify a nation's livability for its average inhabitant. It is a composite of six sub-indexes, each describing one of the elements which objectively influence the quality of life: health, education, wealth, democracy, peace and environment."

This is laughable!  This is similar to the WHO's healthcare ratings in which Cuba came in ahead of the US, as Michael Moore will tell you.  Clearly, what a preposterous claim!  Of course, when one actually looks at the details it is really like Burger King sponsoring a flame broiled contest judged by BK; let me guess who wins that one!  Such qualifications like whether or not rich people are able to pay for experimental procedures, judged better if all are allowed to die rather than a rich one able to pay for an experimental procedure and live.  Would any sane person believe both dying is better?  Michael Moore and the WHO would tell you it is.  Then let each country come up with their own system of counting baby deaths such that they can alter the qualifications to better suit the desired results.
Did you seriously just quote something showing Greece with a better quality of life than the US?  That is freaking hysterical?  Have you seen any news in the last few years about Greece?  Clearly this quality of life takes no consideration of longevity or feasibility or real economic disasters, apparently a country being bankrupt like the Socialist state of California plays no role in the "quality of life" that question must have been omitted accidentally from the quiz/study criteria.
Was this supposed to be in the humor section?  I thought jokes were only allowed in there!?

Pretty hard to argue against subjective data points....I'm curious though---if you attack Capitalism and free market dynamics, and you don't advocate Socialism, what do you propose?  Maybe a world wide economy based on your neighborhood food co-op?
"The problem with Socialism is eventually you run out of other people's money" (M. Thatcher)
"Everyone complains about the weather.  It takes a liberal to try to legislate it" (Not sure who said it but I'd like to buy her/him a drink)
"It's not that our liberal friends are ignorant, it's just that they know so much that isn't so." (R. Reagan)

Also---the Scandinavian countries don't count.  They did the same to their public that liberals are trying to do here---their economic policies are failing, so they push a national pride in the concept of 'Lagom'--"It's enough".  Get used to less---which is what you get when you put your faith in some government more than yourself and the people around you.  When you attack a corporation, that is what you are attacking.  If you want to get by with less, please do.  Just don't vote yourself the money of people that want more for themselves and their families and are willing to work for it.

An old maxim my grandmother used to say seems to be pertinent to this discussion. She liked to say "when there's more people sitting in the wagon than are pulling it, then the wagon stops." Her point was, that when people become dependent on others for their basic needs and whine about their "right" to a certain product/service,  (housing, food, health care, cell phones, etc...) the crumbling of society begins. Now, my grandmother was not a professor or scientist, but she had a PHD in human behavior. As a survivor of the real depression, she knew that one must work hard to get ahead, and if you do work hard, most times you are rewarded with material gain and satisfaction. The real tragedy of socialism is that hard work is not rewarded. One other thing my grandmother observed late in life is still true - she said to me "when I was a kid, only the rich people were fat, and now most of the fat people are people who are considerd "poor." Contained in that statement is a truism; With the advent of cheaper, better engineered food, coupled with food stamps and the welfare state, no one in America need go hungry. Does this stifle folks' incentive to strive to succeed? I believe there's a certain truth to this - just drive in and around any housing project in the country and observe people who have their food, housing, health care and other needs met and you will find many who don't ever try and better themselves. Now, before my more liberal friends howl with indignation, I'm not making a blanket statement, but am merely stating my observations over the past 25 years of interacting with folks in public housing. Not all of them are indolent layabouts, but a great many of them are and it's a shame, for if they were ever to know the satisfaction of a job well done and earning what they eat, they'd be better off financially, emotionally and psychologically. Socialism robs people of these achievements and only serves to enslave all who live within its insidious environment.
