There's an interesting map (1/3 of the way down) of the US climate zones. It shows you what other parts of the country have similar energy environments.

Good info...County of San Diego had to further divide into 14 (!) different climate zones.  We have desert communities that get up to 120F, mountain communities over 6000' elevation, and high densities at the coast that stay pretty mild, salt air and humidity are more of an issue than temperature.
