Title: Getting Closer
Post by: DaveOrr on March 12, 2015, 11:04:31 PM
Took delivery of a large load of materials to build my cabin this week.   :)
Now I just have to haul it all up to the lake & down the lake by truck and trailer before unloading onto my komatik and hauling from the ice road to my site just under 1/2 mile away. It's going to be a little bit of work but once in there I will have enough materials to have a weather tight structure up hopefully before next winter sets in.

You ARE correct John that is cool in fact it looks doggone cold.

Thanks for posting this DaveOrr - To me, this is fascinating about 99.9% of us that use this forum will never be able to say we ever were Ice Road Truckers.  Hey, fill us poor 'southerners' in.    In the event of a real bad Chinook, how long do you have before the ice turns bad?  How far are you driving?  Then pulling it a half mile on a sled?  How many trips with the komatik?    Wink!! You know stuff like that.  The photos are great.  Thanks!!

Glad you have winter to do it.  We have missed the last three or four winters.  Ours have gone from thee to four foot of snow and hanging until April in a huge block of ice to like maybe a foot and a half and gone in February.

We generally don't get chinooks up this far North Rick.
The temps stay below freezing from October to April.
The drive from the highway to my lot is about an 8 mile drive up the ice road.
It's under an hour from my door to the property even during open water season when I have to take the boat.
I was travelling on the ice until late April last spring. The ice is safe for quite a while even after the approaches become impassable.
The shore is always the first to go.

I have no idea how many komatik trips it will take but I will find out. ;)
It is going to take 2 or 3 trailer loads to get the wood out there though.
I have a feeling it will take 10-20 trips with the sled to get all the wood up to the site.

More pictures to come.

Won't be heading out there this weekend by the looks of things as there is a blizzard warning in effect for today.

Got my first load on the trailer and it will be heading up to the property this weekend.   [cool]
I hand loaded 11,000#'s onto the trailer single handed this week. Gonna be buff by the fall!!!   :)

Yeah, I have already thought about that Rick.  ;D
May actually be in decent shape by the fall at this rate.

On another note I priced out the siding that I wanted for the cabin.
WAAAY more $$$ than I expected so am looking at other less expensive options.  :-\
Too bad too because it would have looked awesome and has a 3 hour fire rating.

This is what I found and liked. The hand hewn was what I was looking at.

You got that right Rick.
Still have sore muscles today.
On vacation for the next week. Gotta get the rest of my materials out there before the melt comes.
Which is looking like it's going to start next week some time.   :(

Well I had last week off work and managed to get all of my lumber up to the site.
I figure I moved 25,000#'s of materials during the move.

Managed to get out both days again this weekend to haul more supplies to the property.
Took out all of my salvaged rigid foam off cuts from a commercial job here in town. Have almost enough to do the entire floor. Have plenty of reclaimed fiberglass insulation to haul out still. Should have enough to end up with R45 in the floor.  :)
Also took out ladders, nails, screws, saddles to pin my beams to the bedrock, ice and water shield, roofing underlay and my Tyvek.
I'm done now until the ice goes out as the approaches are getting flooded and the portage is thawing and will become a mud bog by next weekend.

Here's a few pics from the weekend.

Wow, just getting caught up on some of these threads.  This really puts into perspective what a remote build truly is.  I guess I'll stop whining about that 1600' hike in from the road and that whopping hour and a quarter drive.  ;)

I am looking forward to the progress of this build.

He can work at night !  He better be because we are past the solstice now and winter is coming! I have a client up in the Sierra who stays at the house all winter. The road is closed and he uses ham radio to call home. It is not too rough with 5,000 watts of tracked solar.

I'm on week 2 of my vacation now and have my temp shelter up.
Gotta keep the bugs, rain and sun off a fella. Provides a little shelter from the bears too.  ;)
If one gets through he will have to deal with Mr. Remington.   ;D

Also got my foundation layout done and my piling saddles pinned into the granite.
And have 1/2 my piers up and connected with rim board.
Hoping to have the foundation done and the floor in next week.

I lost a day early when I had to remount the shoreline end of my dock due to a large drop over the winter. The floating ramp that had 2 1/2' of water under it last fall was sitting on bottom when I installed it this spring.   :(

Moving them around with brute force and ignorance!!!
No I'm not alone, I have my pooch with me but he doesn't help much.
   :)
They aren't all that hard to work with.
The biggest one of the bunch is almost 9 1/2 feet long and 8"X8".
They are good and dry so fairly light compared to fresh PT beams.
I was short ad needed one 8' and one 5' to finish off the corners. Getting those up the hill from the boat was a heck of a workout for one old fella. Took nearly 2 hours with many breaks.  ;)

Got some more completed today, even though they were calling for rain all day.
FYI, we didn't get a drop!!! It did rain in town for several hours though.
Got the rest of my piers in and all the rim boards + the center boards done.

Next job is to frame in between the perimeter piers before setting my floor joists.

Yeah the 6x6 posts up the middle just have small notches due to the fact that the end posts are 8x8's. Probably going to throw some 2x6 blocking under the 2x10's on the middle 2 posts.

I'm off on vacation until August 9th. Then I get to go back to work to relax!!!   :)

Between showers today I got all of the blocking done. I'm glad that job is over!!! What a pain in the butt.   :(

Floor joists are next!!!!
It's going to be nice working on a flat surface for a change!!!
While the level changes are good for my storage space design they sure are tough to deal with!!!!

Went back out after dinner and threw up a few floor joists.  ;D

After pretty much getting rained out all day yesterday I gave it my all today and finished the floor joists and roughed in my double doors for crawl space access.

Had to take a pic from what will be the living room.
The view does not suck.   :)

Try a topical application of Crown Royal is that does not work take internally.  Here locally known Clown Oil - seems to do the trick.  See people all the time do weird stuff that have self - meded with it.......

Will have to use rum instead!!!   ::)

Didn't get any floor stuff done today.
Back is killing from the last couple of days and it's blowing a gale here.
Didn't want to be handling 75# sheets of OSB sub flooring and get blown off the structure.
So I finished putting in my nailing blocks for the ends of the ceiling panels below and started sheathing the crawl space walls. Will try to finish it tomorrow but they are calling for rain all day.

They were doing a back burn on Harding Lake today as well. This was to choke off the South flank of the Hearn Lake fire.

After a couple of days off it was back at er today.
Got the rest of my sheathing done on the crawl space walls and started getting the floor down and insulated. 3" Styrofoam SM for the first layer and 2 layers of R15 fiberglass on top for a total of R45 in the floor. Should have toasty tootsies.

11 miles as the crow flies between my place and the nearest cell tower.

Back in the early seventies my dad and I almost bought a ranch up on the Lesser Slave Lake....  plus having traveled across BC and Alberta.  That said I was unaware of where you were really building until I seen Yellowknife on the map.  You are a long ways north.... Sort of wonder what it would have been like moving up there.  Mostly been Canadian citizens now.  Canada's early history I have studied a lot from stem to stern.  Was pretty sharp at one time on the Hudson's Bay and the North-westerners.  BTW they crafted a lot of the Pacific Northwest of America history as well.  Glad to really pin down where you are at....

Just when you think you are good to go and the floor is just about done you.........................run out of insulation!!!!
About one bag short!!!  :(
Back to town on a suicide run to get a bag tomorrow so I can caulk, and paint the floor before getting on with the walls.

Finally got the floor all done. Between taking a couple of days off to recoup and some weather delays it took longer than I had hoped.
Got it all insulated, joints caulked and it has a coat of paint on it to seal out the weather.
Tomorrow I start on the walls!!!  :)

The build looks awesome, and what an awesome view. I would love to live up there. I recently read "The Silence of the North," an autobiography of a woman that lived up thataway in the early-mid 20th century. It really sounded like the last frontier.

Took longer than anticipated but got the big section 12'X16' of wall raised and the rest of the wall ready to go up. Ran into a couple of snags with my home made wall jack and had to do a little onsite re-engineering. Got er up single handed though.    :)

Put one of my 3 free temporary windows in for light and ventilation.
Currently on rain delay as there is a T-Storm moving through the area. I'm thinkin' I'll take it easy tonight and just watch a movie and drink a few rums.   :)

Got 1/2 the front wall up and the other 1/2 almost ready to go. Just need to cover my window openings and install my last temporary window. In case you're wondering those front windows are going to be 5'X8'!!    :)
No use having a wicked view if you can't see it!!    8)

The walls are all in place!!!!!   [cool]
Have to finish off the top plates install a beam in the front wall and then build my scaffolding so I can install the ridge board and rafters.

Managed to get most of my front wall beam built but started running low on screws so I switched over to working on my scaffolding as I wanted it at least partially built today.
Got the beam 3/4 done and the scaffolding about 1/2 done.
It even has good locking casters on it to move it around the cabin.

Got my front wall beam finished, also got the scaffolding done. It works great!!   [cool]
Also got my gable end ridge braces in place and have mostly completed assembly of the ridge board. It's going to be interesting trying to get the 41' long piece of 2X12 eighteen feet up in the air!!!!
  [shocked]

Well it took most of the day but I got the ridge board in place and secured!!!    :)
Took about 2 1/2 hours to rig the crane and about 3 1/2 to raise the ridge and secure it.
I figure the board weighs in at about 250#.

Think I'll do light work the rest of the day and start rafters tomorrow.

Got my 4 gable rafters up and in position.
Took longer than expected as I had to work to get my master rafter fitting properly.
Lots of up and down the scaffolding with a 16' 2X10 testing and marking.....................
The good news is the rafters all fit perfectly.
Time for dinner and then see how many I can get done after dinner.

Next weekend I should be able to start sheathing the roof.

Finally got out to the cabin today.
Been blowin' a gale all week. Was gusting 70+ on Friday and 50+ on Saturday.
But this morning there wasn't a breath of wind.   ;D
It was a bit chilly though after the front went through.

Good run up the lake with my shiny new prop. I removed the vent plugs and it performs better out of the hole now too.

Got out to the cabin on Friday night and worked hard all day Saturday before heading back to town before dark.
Would have stayed out all weekend but there is a front moving through tonight and they are calling for some pretty crappy weather tomorrow.
45 kph winds gusting over 70 kph out of the East. They are the worst for my place. Coming straight into my dock from across the lake.
There will probably be 3-4 footers hitting my shore. Not good winds for carrying sheathing on top of the cabin.

Got some more sheathing done on the South side as well as some on the North side. Also got a bunch of my collar ties temporarily in place so I could remove the center brace and crane.
I will level out all the collar ties when the loft is in place.

Crappy weekend this week.   :(

Sick on Saturday, good day on Sunday and rain on Monday.
I didn't get done what I wanted to but did get a little done before heading home early due to the weather. Too dangerous to be up on the roof when it's wet.

Saturday I was able to work for 10 mins before taking a 30 min break. Too weak from the sickness.
Got the door in and some of the exterior sheathing and tuck taping done on the front and South side. Also got half of the back gable end sheathed.

Sunday I got all of the blocking on the North side rafters done as well as the eve and front fly rafters. I redid the sheathing as it wasn't working out from the top down.

Hopefully next weekends weather is good and I can get the roof finished.

Made it out to the cabin today.
The weather was less than stellar but at least the winds weren't too bad.

Next weekend it will be time to pull the dock for the winter.

Took the day off work today.    :)
Got the dock pulled for the winter today.
I also started disassembling the shabby shack and cleaned up the site. Moved all of the lumber needed inside to it's location and other lumber is stored under the cabin. Moved all of the skids out of the way as well. I even managed 2 hours of fishing. Poked over a dozen poikes in that time. A couple of good ones in the 15# range as well as a couple of monsters lost. I know at least one was in the 20+ range.    [cool]

Thanks Dave! Very cool!  Have a great winter and send some  water to California. If you don't we could loose 1/3 of our Ponderosa's.
Our new place was in similar state and did fine for the winter. Took us 2 years after the shell.
