My dad was around that age, and he vividly remembers being allowed to stay up and watch. I think he's consumed every piece of video and literature pertaining to those Liverpudlians since..

I can not say for sure if it was them or not, but here is what happened to me.
I was in school in England in 1960-1961. I think it was summer vacation 1961.
I had a 15 CC Mobilette MOPED. You peddeled to start the engine. One of the
places that I went to was Hamburg where I stayed in a youth hostel.
There I met someone who said there was an English group from Liverpool playing
at a club in town. So, being lonely for the sound of English voices I decided to go.
At one point during the evening I noticed a girl sitting at a table by her self and
she looked English. I walked over and started to talk to her. Before I realized  it a
guy from the band comes over and tells me in no uncertain terms, to get away from his
girl. I was just a young kid at the time, so I took off post haste.

It wasn't till a year later that I heard that they were there in Hamburg performing
at that time. I am not sure of the time so It could have been Easter vacation or
maybe Christmas vacation, but it was 1961 for sure.
