Title: Lobo's Den (East Alabama)
Post by: scottbama on May 21, 2011, 10:38:38 PM
Ok gang! Finally, I started on my little 24x24 (not completely square) home. This project will move along as there is money available for materials. Question to be safe - my floor joists are 12' span, 12" OC, should I put bracing at 4' and 8' in between the joists or is that overkill/underkill? There will be tons of questions since I do not know a thing about building a home.

Also, how do I post images here?

Hi Scott,
Blocking or bridging are not required until the joists are deeper than 2x12 as long as the ends are nailed to the rim and there is a floor nailed to the tops of the joists. A study in the 70's showed that they actually do not improve the strength of the floor in most situations. Before I quit doing this my main source of callbacks was squeeks caused by the bridging. 12" oc is tight spacing, is there an unusual floor load?
