Title: bore holes near top of stud?
Post by: dug on August 16, 2011, 01:53:52 PM
More plumbing woes. Sink vent pipe has to go up 42 inches before I can go to horizontal and tie it into a vent stack. It is a kitchen sink and there is a window located above it at 46 inches. I would have to drill through the cripple studs and jack stud 3 inches o/c from the top, leaving 2 inches of material from the top of the hole to the top of the stud.

I have studied boring guidelines in the code book, and searched the internet but have found no information as to how high (or low) you are allowed to bore holes in studs.

I don't believe there is minimum end distance... but there probably should be. This isn't going to make anything stronger so stay as far from the ends as you can. And do be braced for impact, catching a nail can wind things up pretty tight.
