Hawaii building permits

I would like some feedback on experiences on getting the Country Plans thru the Hawaii Building Dept. (Big Island, Hilo) I'm not there yet, but maybe someone has some "heads up" on what to expect. Thankyou

Here is a short movie on the building of the 14x24 Builder's cottage in Hawaii. This lockable cabin has used the easy to build Little House post and pier foundation. The owner's have used T1-11 siding and have closable panels to cover the windows and door openings.

I used to live in Honolulu, in a wide variety of student (cheep, cheep!) places ranging from a room in someone's house to a servant's quarters 92 steps above the garage.   Nice view.

But that was years ago.

Most everything is imported, from the mainland or Asia.  I guess they could make their own lime--therefore concrete, but I kind of doubt if they do.  You mostly don't have to build for cold--or excruciatingly hot--but wind and rain--central Pacific hurricanes during hurricane season--rare but possible or Kona storms (straight line winds IIRC, but tons of rain and winds up to hurricane force) in the winter, not infrequent.  

And there are lots of termites.  

I remember a play at the old theatre that simply stopped in mid-speech because of swarming termites coming close to shutting down the audience's view of the stage.  The reviewer thought it added to the play.

And you get to build accordingly.  Don't know what people are doing now.
