Title: 12x16 modern manshed
Post by: markert2523 on May 21, 2009, 07:31:27 PM
Well, I finally broke ground on my 12x16 modern manshed.  Just 200 square feet or so to be used for sitting around, drinking cold beers and playing music.  Also will have a small electronics bench and some music recording gear.  Shed style with tall wall 10' and short wall 8'.  Eventually will have deck off one side for entertaining.

FYI--just had to pull zoning clearance with the city.  No actual building permit under 200 SF.

Site---in my backyard here in Oklahoma

My best friend from the rental company--hydraulic posthole digger with 12" auger
(https://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s315/spammeup/Manshed/IMG_3310.jpg)

12" holes dug and the bottoms flared out with a shovel
(https://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s315/spammeup/Manshed/IMG_3312.jpg)

8" tubes in and cut flush.  Laser level helped much.

Each tube has a concrete footing with a single piece of horizontal rebar and a vertical piece of rebar
(https://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s315/spammeup/Manshed/IMG_3317.jpg)

Tubes filled and simpson brackets embedded in the concrete.  Beams to be built (double 2x10" with 1/2" plywood) and waiting for concrete to cure
(https://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s315/spammeup/Manshed/IMG_3318.jpg)

This is the bracket I used

Oh well, not a huge project but I am learning some valuable skills along the way.

More when I make some progress.

Thanks for all the help getting me this far.

Lookin good , maybe you should have used a CB 44 bracket ,

  http://www.strongtie.com/products/connectors/lcb-cb.asp

   More up lift strenght.

To late now but some one else might read this in  a high wind area uplift is your enemy!

That being said IF you place ends up in the path of one of your tornado's nuttins gonna hold it down.

Will you be using H-1 on your floor joist to beam connections , as well as your rafter to top plate connections?? It would be a good idea IMO.

  H1

Maybe even theses H10's  , more uplift strenght.

PEG688, thanks for the info.

I had never seen the simpson's you show---wish I had, but too late now.  Likely I will be fine, though we do get a fair amount of wind and tornados.  Maybe I'll play it double safe and use some of the mobile home auger tie-down things underneath.

I am planning to use the H1 brackets for the roof/floor joists.

Back to work on the manshed this week.

Floor joists in---2x8 with Simpson H1 brackets tying them to beams.

Finally some useful work out of the 10 year old
(https://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s315/spammeup/Manshed/IMG_3336.jpg)

Kind of a stressful time raising the first 10 ft wall

One wall up and braced.  Openings for fixed windows along the top.  Dylan grilling steaks in background.

Hopefully put some more walls up next 2-3 days.  Was planning to hire a framing crew to put walls up but buddy talked me into doing it ourselves.  So far, so good!

What do you think it will cost to build?
Title: Re: 12x16 modern manshed
Post by: markert2523 on June 03, 2009, 11:52:58 AM
I'm estimating about 5K to build.  Maybe more if I use cedar siding.  It will have electric and minisplit heat pump for AC and mild heat.  I based this upon the sheds at modern-shed.com.  They will deliver one to you, ready to assemble at a cost of 20K :o.  I plan to get 5K worth of fun out of this thing, but I would have to do a lot of hanging out in the manshed to justify 20K!

Looks like you're off to a good start. 5k sounds close but I think more like 7k. Depends on how you finish it.

More work on the manshed.   Walls are up and rafters cut.  Will start to put those on soon.  The rafters in the pic are just sitting up there to test the fit.

Rafter cuts were a little tricky.  Framing squares are a mystery to me.  I used a method I found in an old book where you snap a midline chalk line on a rafter and tack it up to the end of the roof.  The top plate outline is traced and then the trace lines are cut.  Then the rafter ends are trimmed for vertical plumb.  Seems to have worked and left me a horizontal surface for the soffit.

Will likely deck the roof with 1/2" OSB and then finish with ice & water shield under three tab shingles.

Have a question about the siding.  I want to put up cedar like ScottA.   I originally planned to put OSB sheathing beneath the cedar.  Unfortunately I will likely get deployed on Army duty before I can complete that time consuming process.  I am thinking about skinning it with T1-11 siding for now and will go back later with the felt and cedar.  Will the T1-11 be a problem when I start putting on the felt/cedar.  I've heard it's fairly hard stuff.  Will the grooves present any problem such as moisture wicking?

Thanks

Eric

I don't think you will have a problem using T1-11 for a sheathing and then going over it with felt and siding later. Just plan to block out the door and window frames so they work with the final siding surface. You could use caulk on these frames for now and then do proper flashings when the siding goes up.

PS - I like what looks like a band of 4 windows on the high wall. That will provide great light and a sky peek.

Post by: markert2523 on June 06, 2009, 10:37:31 PM
Thanks John.  The top fixed windows will be along the front and the sides.

I sure am having a hard time picturing how I will handle the soffit where the front soffit meets the side soffit.  The front one will be level while the side soffit will slope along with the shed roof.  I plan to build the first rafter as an "outrigger" with 2x4 laddered to the first "birds mouth" rafter.  Anybody see what I'm saying?

Across the 8" and 10" walls is the built up beam 2x6 or 2x8?

Post by: Redoverfarm on June 07, 2009, 05:42:48 PM
Market I think what you are referring to is the false rafter or fly rafters to establish the overhang.  It would be the same plane as the front.  You might have to add a nailer along the side of the building at the location of the bottom of your rafter.  Then attach your soffit to the bottom of the false rafter and to the nailer against the wall (level) to establish your soffit.  Same would be said for all four sides ( nailing the 2X2 (1-1/2 X 1-1/2") to use for the support of the soffit against the house and using the bottom of the rafters for the support away from the house.

To make the false or fly rafters I use the mortise support method.  With a 2X placed on the flat at the top and bottom approximately 4' from each (top and bottom)  measure the length from the inside of the false rafter to the inside of the 2nd rafter on the building. Now motise the first rafter to except the 2X laided on flat.  End nail the false rafter to that 2X and then nail the other end to the 2nd rafter on the roof.  Then nail the false rafter support at the mortise point.

Make sense?

If you use 4X8 material for the soffit make sure that the bracing ( as you referred to as Ladder) fall on 4' increments to make the seam of the material fall on that cross brace.

Figure 2-28 shows it probably better than I am explaining at http://www.waybuilder.net/sweethaven/BldgConst/Building01/default.asp?iNum=0903

Redover---I ended up doing something that seems to work.  The slanted side walls have a top plate that is made of a double sandwich beam 2x4 with 1/2 inch osb.  The first rafter is a couple of inches within the building footprint.  I took 2x4 pieces and end nailed them to the first rafter.  They then are nailed into the top plate and the final outside outrigger is end nailed into these.  Seems to work OK except I had to do some shimming to get the outrigger parallel (I nailed it up a little low).  The short 2x4 pieces look a little slanted because of this but all will eventually be hidden by soffit.  Thanks for the good link.

Soomb---The front (10') wall has a continuous double 2x6 with OSB composite beam.  The maximum unsupported span is about 43" for each fixed window.  The rear (8') wall has a continuous double 2x10 with OSB composite beam.  I haven't quite decided what to do with the back wall for windows, etc so I wanted to be able to be flexible.  Currently there is a 7' unsupported span in the middle.  So the 2x10 header is supported at the ends and at about 4' in from each end with triple 2x4 verticals.

Beavers and all---Thanks for the encouragement.

Was wondering if anybody had any idea what it may cost to have a thermal window company come out and install insulated transom windows in the top front windows.  The more I think about it, the more I think I will want to vent hot air out the front windows.

More pics soon.

Thanks

Eric

Got most of the rafters and one of the side outriggers on.  Starting to look like a manshed!

Close-up of how I did the outrigger.

Just need to finish the other outrigger and put H1 simpson brackets on the rafters---then will be ready for roof.

Howdy Folks,

Got the roof deck on finally.  Currently covered with full coverage Grace Ice & Water (select).  Waiting for roofer to give me a bid for metal roof.

I'm still a little unsure what to do about trimming the front top windows.  I have a bid to have a company make crank windows for each one.  The windows will be 3.25" deep.  Adding up my thickness of OSB sheath + battens + cedar windscreen (like ScottA) I get about 2".  I'm thinking about trimming each window opening with 1x6" PT stock---the same stuff I used for fascia.  The trim would protrude 2" out of the window opening.  Then the window guy can push the window out a bit and I can flush up the siding to the trim.  Would likely need to install some flashing along the top of the top trim piece.  Does this make any sense?

Here is a pic of the window openings.

I am thinking about using Lexan Twinwall for the side fixed windows.  Having custom windows made for these would be prohibitively expensive.  Anyone ever use this stuff?  Kind of pricey in its own right but would likely provide a little sound/thermo insulation compared to regular glass.

Eric, I think that is the type of window Fritz used in his Dogtrot house. Having crank-out windows up high should create a pretty good current of air to keep the place cool.  [cool]

How far apart are your beams spaced.  It looks like the overhang of your joists are only a foot, which would make your beams spaced 10 feet.  Is there any bounce or is the 2x8 rigid enough.  I'm building the same size but with gable roof.

I'm going to rent the same auger as you.  Was it pretty easy to use or did it beat you up a little.  Just wondering if I can do myself or should I have help. Thanx for any help ahead of time.

Secordpd,

Yes, my beams are spaced at 10' and the 2x8" at 16" OC feel good to me.

As far as the auger, you should be able to do it yourself.  Augering down is stable and easy.  The hard part is lifting the entire auger out periodically to spin out the cuttings.  Once it's down the whole two feet it gets hard to pull back up.  I also used the 12" bit.  I flared out the bottoms of my holes for the footings.  It took about two hours to bore all eight holes.

Good luck.

Post by: markert2523 on June 18, 2009, 10:44:27 PM
Yep, four feet is a two man job.  Also remember to get the auger extender since the usual auger will likely go down only 2 feet.

Well, I got the windows framed and most of the outside skin on today.  For the windows I just used 1x6 PT stock and lined all sides of the rough opening, with a couple of inches overhanging to the outside.  I got the bottom sill to slant towards the outside by stapling in a little sliver of sill foam under one edge.  Then I had to cut the side pieces at a slight angle to make everything line up.  Clear as mud?  I never claimed to be a finish carpenter.  I will post some pics of what I did later---worked until after dark.

ScottA--Not sure I've seen the vinyl but I like the idea of metal for the long run.  Still waiting on my bid but the folks from this roofing outfit sure seem more capable and trustworthy than the first couple of guys that threw bids at me (one for a torchdown roof, but not using the underlayment--yikes!)

By the way, I saw my shed design for sell on ebay today.  I had originally drawn up my design on a simple cad program and sent it to a guy on the internet to draw it up into construction plans.  He drew it up very cheaply and now I know why----he's selling the plan on ebay.  Kind of spooky seeing my shed on ebay.  Oh well, I essentially borrowed heavily from the sheds they sell at modern-shed.com anyway.  I hope the guy doesn't end up getting sued.  Here it is:

Still waiting for the metal roof.  Still trying to decide where to have my windows made.

I've been thinking that I won't have time before a looming army deployment to put on the cedar siding so I'm thinking of putting up the tarpaper and battens and then installing horizontal galvanized barn tin.  I've seen it a lot lately in modern design and I could pull it off later and install cedar.  Any thoughts on this?

Thanks

Off topic I know but, what is the highway cruiser in the background-----Mercury or Lincoln?

ps: I have an architect friend who has used the "barn tin" several times with great success----It would really look good on the shed roof styling you have.

Tis a 1966 Mercury Parklane "Breezeway" sedan with a 410 4v engine.  Was called Breezeway since the rear window rolls up and down (sometimes).  It is not shown in the later pics since it has gone to a restoration place for some much needed TLC.

Manshed progress moving along.  Metal roof finished--the only thing I've contracted so far and well worth the money.  #30 felt on the sheathing is finished and the french door in.  Next need to order my windows and start the siding.  Also need to order the Lexan twinwall polycarbonate for the side windows.

I have all the cedar boards for the siding already sanded and stained (thanks Curt).  Hoping to get it all sided and buttoned up before I ship out to Iraq next month.

More work on the modern manshed.

Vertical battens for the siding.  I ripped 2" strips from 1/2" PT plywood and painted them flat black to blend in with the felt.  You can also see in this picture the opaque Lexan twin wall material I used for the side fixed windows.

Started putting the siding on.  All of the cedar is already sanded/stained and ready to go on.  I used a 3/8" drill bit to put the space between the courses---just like Scott.  I'm shooting the cedar on to the battens with 2" galvanized finish nails.  It actually goes on fairly quickly.

Moving right along.  Trying hard to get to a good stopping point before deploying to Iraq again in about 3 weeks.  I sure am going to miss this manshed while I'm gone (oh, and of course my wife and children, too)

Well, I finally got all of the cedar siding done.  It took me and my hand 19 hrs total to do the entire siding/trim (not counting the time to sand/stain the boards last month).  I am very pleased with it and much thanks to Scott for the ideas/advice.

Thanks for the comments, folks.  I've had a great time building this and learning along the way.

Mike, I used an Olympic semi-transparent cedar stain from Lowes.  I plan to apply it every year for a few years and then see how it goes.  It took two gallons to stain all of the stock.

Where did you get the Lexan twin wall .  How much was it?  What did you cut it with?  Can you give a close up of how it was installed/attached?  Sorry for all the questions, but I would like to use in my project, I have the same  triangular space as you with a shed roof

Thanks, Secordpd

I ordered the lexan twinwall from eplastics.com.  It was about $70 or so for each 4x8 sheet.  I cut it with my jigsaw and a regular blade.  I will try to get some closeups.  I lined the window openings with 1"x2" cedar stock and used small finishing nails to wedge it into place.  Caulked it with clear caulk.  Works great and lets a lot of light in.

The manshed project has been on hold while I serve a deployment here in Iraq.  Wanted to show my digs here.  Living in a 9x15 end of a CHU (containerized housing unit).  Plenty big enough and I can't complain.  My rank affords me a private CHU---the enlisted are living double in the same floor plan.

Can't wait to get back and finish the manshed, hopefully this January.

Following along with the forum has been a great way to feel connected to home.

Y'know, those things cost, at that size, around 20,000 bucks from a prefab company.

And yours looks better!

People that would pay that amount make me think of PT Barnum.

Howdy folks,

Back from Iraq and back to work on my manshed!   Hopefully soon I will need to have my driveway cut in order to have the electrician run electric service from my house.  I'm wondering what else I can run in the same trench?  If I'm cutting the driveway, I want to put some other stuff in there for future use.  Maybe TV cable, 12volt line, data line and possibly even a pipe that could provide water service in the future.  Just not sure if all of this can go in the same trench.  Certainly would be in different conduits.  Any input?

Thanks

w* back.  Glad you returned safely.

Normally there is a 12" buffer from the electrical amd other utilities.  Depends on your area probably. Here conduit for the power needs 3" .

Welcome back,

You can put sleeves in the trench for future use. I would check local codes for separation and cover requirements.

As an example, Power and water in my area needs 3' between them but power and communication lines only require 2" separation. Communication and water have no required separation. All secondary lines need 2' cover.  Also they may require a certain color conduit.

Making progress on the manshed.

New beam for a small bumpout to increase storage.

Had to cut the driveway to run a trench for electric service.  While at it I added an empty 2" pvc pipe for future needs.

So--- the electric is finished and all insulation is installed.  Sheetrock being delivered this week.  After sheetrock/paint all I will have left (in a major sense, there's always more to do!!) is the floor.  The subfloor is a little uneven at the seams and I think I will lay down some laminate pad/vapor barrier and then staple down a layer of Luan plywood.  If the luan is even enough, I think I will stain/poly it and live with it for a while.

Also I need to install the minisplit heat pump but the purchase/install cost will be about $1500.  I'm thinking I might just install a small $150 8,000 btu window unit in the back wall and be happy for a while.  Heat is not much of a problem as a small space heater seems to keep it warm enough now that the insulation is in.

Oh well, that's the update.  Any comments on the floor, ac unit or anything else.

Thanks

Eric

Looks great Eric. I like the windows and slant style roof. I almost considered that roof style for my house but was worried about all the runoff water going against the berm.

Glad you made it back from Iraq safe. Keep the pics coming!

Matt, great to hear from you.  I'm sure you'll be out in the yard with more projects once the snow clears.  Guys like you and I can never let well enough alone!

Making progress.  Finished the first layer of sheetrock and decided to lay another layer on top of that.  I put a layer of foam between them.  I just used laminate floor underlayment stapled to the first layer and put the second layer of rock on top of that.  Hopefully will decouple the layers and block more sound.  One of the pics below shows the underlayment layer.

After painting the rock I installed a layer of foam underlayment on the floor and shot in cheap luan plywood over that.  Shot it in with a crown stapler.  Looks pretty good after four coats of poly.

I really like the Lexan twinwall side windows but they bleed a lot of sound.  I have cut removable panels backed with compressed owens corning fiberglass board to fit in the windows

Hey Eric...great project!  I bet that will be a lot more comfortable to rehearse in that Dave and Malissa's basement.

Took me while to put the blatantly obvious clues together (rib crib t-shirt, Oklahoma, doing your military service, and the kid that looks exactly like you) but then I realized, I used to run sound (badly) for your band!

Good to see you again and keep up the good work.

Your manshed looks very awesome..Great place to hide out!  I love the look of the siding that you and ScottA did, but have a small question-  What keeps the wasps out?  (Maybe you don't have wasps there?)  I live in Southern Missouri, and I'm afraid that would be one gigantic wasp nest, with all the tiny gaps.  They get in any tiny space that's out of the weather and sun.  Got any ideas how that could be solved?

This is a nest I had to deal with in one of my wall-module building forms.  I used most of a can of wasp spray on it just to be sure...

Well, the modern manshed is almost complete.  Just need to wire in some track lighting and find a contractor to install my minisplit heat pump (has been delivered--bought it off ebay).

Already full of music equipment.

Here's a pic of the new fence near the manshed that I built using the same cedar as the siding.

If anybody knows a decent AC contractor in Tulsa to install the minisplit for me, let me know.

Phase two will be the deck and pergola.  May have to wait a bit---I'm tired!

That is a sharp looking fence, but I don't see a mansbestfriendshed in the picture, a future project perhaps.
That sure looks like some circa 1970 Altec Lansing gear in your rack.  If you ever decide you do want a window that is somewhat soundproof, you might be interested in how they do windows in recording studios.  They use two sheets of glass of different thicknesses and not mounted parallel.  The ones I have seen are about 9-10 inches thick overall and the glass is wide apart at the top and about an inch apart at the bottom, and the glass is mounted in rubber channels.
As far as gear goes, I hate to say it, but phalynx has you beat on the knob count. For a quick peek take a look at this:

It is amazing what can be done with windows for blocking sound. I've worked (a long time ago) in a radio studio that had windows overlooking the main thoroughfare through the city, 4 lanes of traffic each way. Triple panes with that slanted spacing. You couldn't hear the busses, 18 wheelers and so on at all.

As far as HVAC, run away from A-Able.  There used to be a Carrier dealer on 600 or 900 N Peoria, West side of the street.  Been years since I used them but they were great.

Since you are using a mini-split, you might be better off finding someone who does commercial work...particularly restaurant kitchens.  I think that is the only place I ever saw one installed in Tulsa.

Honestly, you could do the install yourself if you had the vac pump and the right gauges.  The modern Freon is CFC free, the fittings on most kits are pre-flared and you may even have bought a kit that comes with a pre-filled compressor and lines (that is what I did, no vac pump, and just a top off of freon).  Think of it this way, if the TCN's over here can do it, you probably can too.  Heck, you just built your own version of a CHU from scratch!

Howdy Folks,

Ready to start the pergola for the manshed and wanted to do something like this

I like the reed screen they used as shade cover but I want something a little more rain resistant.

Stay with me here---it gets complicated.

I thought I might use 2x6's for the cross members, but rip/taper them from 6" on one end (actually 5.5") to 4" (actually 3.5") on the other.  I could use 6" cedar as the rims on three sides. On the back side (the 4" side) the rim would be 4" cedar.  That would allow me to install some clear lexan panels over the reed screen.  Yes, I know a 2" drop over 12 feet isn't enough to make it water tight, but it would likely be better than water dripping straight through the reed screen.  Plus, nobody would see the back side since it abuts the back fence.  And hopefully the reed screen mostly hides the lexan panels.

Anybody tracking?

Eric

Finally got around to starting the pergola for the manshed.  14x16' with beam span of 14' and joist span of about 10'.  All cedar.  6x6" posts are set in concrete with gravel at bottom of holes.  It looks like I set them into sono tubes but these sono tube "rings" are actually 3" sections cut from a 12" diameter sono tube.  After I filled the holes with concrete I slipped these sono tube sections over the top of the posts and then filled them with concrete.  I did that to elevate the concrete at the post bottoms off the grade.  Sure it would have been better to pour a concrete footing and anchor the posts with simpson brackets, but I suspect I'll get a good 20 yrs out of these before they rot and likely another 10 yrs after that before it falls down!

The beams (double 2x12") have a 3" height difference.  I plan to cover the joists with rolled bamboo screen and then top that with clear lexan corrugated roof panels.  With such a low pitch it won't be watertight but should be good enough.  Not sure if I can describe this well but the perimeter fascia boards are 1x8" while the joists are 2x6".  That leaves me some depth to drop in the lexan panels where they won't be seen from the side.

Mad-dax, those are called awning windows.  I took my measurements to Home Depot and they ordered them custom-made.  Reasonable cost and they work well.  I think those four windows plus the two vertical casement windows were under a thousand bucks.  Not bad for getting exactly what I wanted.

Great shed!!!

I am a musician as well and thinking about building a shed just like this one.  How are acoustics?  Any recommendations of sound treating?

How does it sound from the outside when things are cranked up?

Also, what is the beam and space behind it at low end of the roof in the last pictures?  Didn't see that in the framing pics. ...nevermind, just saw the post on it.  How many sqft did it add?

Thanks!

Looks great!  I really like the profile.  Your 2/12 pitch looks pretty good.  I'm starting a 10x12 shed roof project in the spring but I have to use a 3/12 roof to manage the snow.  Short wall 7', high wall 10'.  I'm afraid it's going to look a bit silly.  We are going to put a pergola on the front/high side for shade.  I'll use greenhouse cloth so it can be removed for winter, again for the snow.  Thanks for sharing!

Hey folks,

Been working on the manshed the last few months and wanted to update the thread.  Finished the pergola with a hard roof.  Hired a contractor to pour a footing and build block base for the fireplace and cooking island.  I framed up the fireplace and used an indoor insert for the firebox.  Really almost done except waiting for the granite to get cut for the fireplace hearth and island top.

What are the dimensions of the pergola?

Are you going to use any lateral bracing?

Pergola is 12'x16'.  I hadn't planned on any lateral bracing.  Prevailing storm winds are from the west---I guess the worst it could do is smash into the manshed and ruin two years of work ;)

I'm starting new project to build 10x14 shed. I'm planning to use T&G pine planks for siding.
How your siding performed since it was installed? Was there any damage due to expansion or moisture?

Been absent from the forum for a bit.

My siding has held up quite well.  I've restained it every year with a semi-transparent stain.  I could probably go a couple of years or so now without a restain.  Only prob is wasps but really no big deal.
