My son and I are planning on building a small home in Northern Maine.   He wants to build on piers and hook into an existing well and Septic. He also wants to do this on a shoestring budget of $10,000 for at least a weather tight shell that can be finished over the winter and following summer.

Please recommend books, videos, or other sources of information for low cost, and even non-traditional construction methods.  Especially exterior plumbing. My skill level includes framing and finish carpentry, interior plumbing, roofing experience.

These are all very good. I'll probably think of some others later.

The Fine Homebuilding Small Houses book had some ideas on buried supply lines for areas with a deep frostline in the "Vacation Cabin" article.  You'd probably find a lot more searching here on this forum, because it is a common issue.

Oh... and all the Lloyd Kahn books just for great visual examples of non-traditional construction.

Some of the home depot books are pretty good and show common parts or items they sell. It can make it easier to "see".
"we go where the power lines don't"
