I will have more pictures in the spring we have quit working on the cabin for the winter there is to much snow up there now. We cannot get into the camp

Yes my first plan was to build a 20x24 when I planned it out at home on my lawn I realized it was just a little bit smaller than what I wanted so I ended up going with a 20x30  Cabin

Funny how that happens, eh?  :)  Our cabin started as a simple 16x20 and ended up 20x26, with a loft like yours.

Good job! Lots of progress!  Like you, we are snowed out of access to the camp. Makes for a long winter. :(

No major difference.  You probably have less need for bracing, as the peirs  are one piece.  Posts coulld be easier where there is a greater slope - I have seen some go from 0 to 10 feet or so around here.

Both methods transfer the load to the ground.

Going up to my mother in-laws for Christmas my camp is ½ an hour away from her house I am going to try to get into the camp so I can take some additional pictures with all the snow up there I might have to do a little bit of snow shoeing    Merry Christmas everyone

I will be starting to work on my cabin  in may .The first thing I will be working on is building the porch. I am not sure how the metal roof joins from the main roof to the porch roof .Does the porch roof metal just tuck underneath the main roof

You will need proper flashing if on a different pitch -- tell us where it is going -and if there is a pitch change - have you considered if the slope will get down over your windows? ???

I did find the proper flashing thanks yes there will be pitch change and no it will not go down below the windows or door.
One more question if any one can help thanks I am going to buy vinyl windows with a j trim built into them for the vinyl siding to join to. I see allot of new houses with vinyl window and a vinyl trim on the outside looks like it could be around a 2" or 3"l ays flat around the outside window I guess like a window shutter I am not sure where to buy this or who the manufacture would be    Thanks

When you do a reply - not a quick reply if you have that turned on, but hit the blue reply button below to the right ---and all the icons - smileys etc are showing, there is a line that starts with a large B for bold - next is I for Italics the U for underline etc ---

Directly under the I for italics is the little picture that will give you the code brackets.  Click it the  " [img ][/img ] " brackets will appear.  Paste your picture location link you copied right between the center brackets.

This tree swayed in a wind storm hit my roof and dented it I am thinking I built the cottage a little to close to the tree I am thinking about cutting the tree down what do think

hmm I'm using a tree to hold my house up....

You might consider trimming a cutout in the roof to make it look like you intended it that way for the tree to remain thereif it is a good healthy.  It is a rather intereting thing to do as I did on my patio. 

Contrary to many peoples beliefs, the majority of trees don't normally fall over and smash a house.  It is a consideration in some areas.

A notch would be fine, IMO. If it's healthy I'd keep it, too. When I build the porch on our cabin end I'll likely be doing that for one of the pines.  :)

I vote for keeping the tree - adds interest!  That porch looks awesome - very inviting!  Do you have more pics?  You know we like lots of pictures  :)

Hi Bobby,

I am interested in knowing where did you get the iron joist/beam hangers? I am building my cottage too in Quebec (lac-des-plages, halfway from Montebello to Mt-Tremblant) and I am thinking of using post and beam as you did with your cottage.

Also I am interested in knowing what did you do with the other part of the house whithout the loft. Did you use only one I-joist? And by the way, can the I-joist work as a rafter tie (I know that it is good for load bearing, but as a tie? and how do you attach it to the wall to make it strong?)

I purchased 6" deck hangers from home depot .I then used 2 of them to make one I had to cut and weld them together to make 8" hangers.

The side without the loft I used two 2x8s with a 2x6 in the middle of them I put 2 of these up I attached them to the rafters with lots of 4" nails. I am not sure if this is the right way of doing it but this is the way I did it. I have no experience in construction. I am doing a lot of reading and doing all the work from information I get from the Internet.

thanks for the info. One more question though: from where did you manage to find 20' lumber? or you only used 16' for the rafter tie? do you know a place that they sell 20' lumber? I've been calling everywhere, but it seems no one has such length.

I used 16' lumber for my rafter ties if I had used 20' lumber it would be sitting right on top of my wall. With the 16' it sits higher and gives an appearance of a higher cathedral ceiling

The lane way was already there .The clearing for the cottage took 7 hours. The bulldozer will be coming back to go down the mountain to the lake this should take him about 8 hours . 

Started my vinyl siding this weekend completed a wall and a half. I am late doing the siding it was back ordered for 5 weeks. I hope I can complete it before winter nights are already cold it was –2 last night no wood stove yet either brrrr

Bobby hope you get a few warm days as the vinyle is very difficult to work with when the temps drop below 40F-50F.  Maybe you posted before and I missed but what kind of heat are you going to use?  Maybe in the interm you could purchase a couple 20# gas cylinders and a double eye heater.  Don't trust the kerosene heaters as the fumes will take a toll on you after a while.  Last night was probably the coldest this year with 26F and heavy frost.

We will be installing a wood stove next summer. For now we are using 3 electric heaters that are not working very well. We still have not yet insulated our cabin this also will have to be completed next summer. There is just not enough time on weekends.

My wife would like for me to build a cinder block wall in the cottage 10' long x 7' high. I think this might be too heavy for the floor??? Do they make a fake cinder block light weight??   Thanks

There are a number of fake rocks available. Out new Lowe's has a good sized portion of the facade done in it. I don't know about cinder blocks though?

Yes I will start insulating my cabin this spring I am patiently waiting for the snow to melt before I can start work on the cabin. I like how you insulated your floor first this is something I guess I should have done looks like I will be crawling around in the dirt under the cabin now.

You can pretty well only do that floor insulation first if there is no chance of water getting into it during the rains - such as roof complete if rain will be a problem.

Love the place.  It looks great.  I'm going to build our veranda this spring and was still thinking about how I was going to tackle it.  I wanted to have it continue off the existing metal roof but thought it might be too late, having already installed the metal roofing.

Can you tell me a little bit about how you installed your veranda?  I see that you added it after-the-fact as I am going to try, yet yours has the appearance that it is continuous.  I also see that you used a ledger board.  Would love to hear/see more about the veranda installation.

I started by removing the fascia board. This gave me a 1-1/2" of roofing sheet metal over hang .I then joined the new rafters to the sides of the existing rafters, installed the strapping snug up to the sheet metal this allowed me to slide new roofing under the existing roofing (http://lh5.ggpht.com/_19r4bBcvxdk/SbMBNR9E8fI/AAAAAAAAEPg/Bpy7td2UI44/DSC00902.JPG). I started my sheeting from left to right all top right corners had to have a nib cut out of them this allowed them to slide under the existing roofing .When you install your second sheet you will see what I mean .I am sure this is not the proper way of doing this but it did work for me .

Did you have to bend the metal on the veranda to match the angle of the roof?

Well we got back up to the cabin last weekend  -7 was kina cold with no heat. we did have a couple of space heaters that really didn't help much.

It's me again!!  Hope this Spring finds you well.  I know you said that the your veranda caused you no issues with the soffit, but now that I'm there in my installation, I don't understand how you vented the side of the cabin where the veranda is attached.  With the facia gone, doesn't that eliminate the option of installing soffits?

Any further explanation would be greatly appreciated.

I am thinking about using insulation with kraft paper on my ceiling of the cottage . I don't know much about it .I am told I will require some type of hardware to install it ???.I am assuming I will not need a vapor barrier. Do I just staple this to the studs.javascript:void(0);

Yes you can staple the kraft backed batts up in between the ceiling joists. That's what I did to get the first layer of insulation up there. That was last fall. We installed R13 as a start and because I got a slight deal on some. This June we'll be renting a cellulose blower and blowing in about R30 worth on top of the fiberglass.

Bobby.B there is a flange on the paper side(moisture barrier) that attaches to each side of the lumber.  Generally staples are used.  By attaching to the sides it still allows you to see the lumbers face edge for attaching the ceiling/wall covering(drywall or lumber).

I found a used metal spiral stair case for $250.
Out with the drop down stairs and in with the metal sooo much better.

 I have finally had a chance to post some pictures of our kitchen we recently installed. we still have some minor things to finish like slate tiles for the back splash and water hook up it is coming along slow but it is getting there.

Man, That's some nice cabin. It was great to see the interior simple but nice. You did it the way I plan on doing mine which is drywall  and t&g ceilings. Very well done, kudos!  [cool]

Hi, great work! I'm from Quebec too and planning to build something soon in the low-Laurentians. About the piers foundation you'd used:
how deep did you dug them?
did you need some "municipal approval" before setting them?
I heard that some town are a bit strict about foundation, only accepting the full-basement...     

The piers are four feet deep.
I did get a building permit, no one ever came to inspect it not that I am aware of anyways. My taxes did jump from $200.00 to $1200.00   

Your build looks really great! How did the drywall go? We are planning to do ours too. Also where did you get those cabinets, were they pretty reasonable? I really love the look of craftsman style cabinets, but I can't find any within our budget.

We installed the drywall and then hired a person to do the taping a plaster. The cabinets and counter top come from IKEA the cost I think was around $2000.00 I used the IKEA kitchen planner program to plan and price out my kitchen, it worked very well.

I thought that was where I had seen that design.   [cool]  All and all what do you think of Ikea's knock down cabinets?  I have seen them in their stores but have not talked any one that has tried them.  We had our eye on them when start our house - then I thought I would build them.  Then it is getting  so late in to the year.  But then what is there to do on cold winter nights other than make raised front panels and cut out drawer pieces parts.   ???

I really like them ,good quality and they were very easy to install.
