I have a buddy that runs a website that is looking to add something similar (if not exactly) like the member map here.  If you found it someplace out on the 'net, can you point me to it and I'll send him there to check it out?

Thanks!

Our Member Map comes from Google. For us it was simple. We use SMF software for the forum. There are a huge array of add ons available for the forum software. We simply got the mod or app if you will and installed it. It is available for some other forum software. Without knowing anything about the specific software your friend uses I can not add much to that. Perhaps do a Google on "google member map"?  ???

I visited the members map today and it was not functioning.   ???  Maybe I am not functioning - or my pewter is not.......... :-\

I've just tested the member map and it is working fine in Firefox and Safari, but not in IE10, IE11, or Chrome.

The javascript error being generated is:

Refused to execute script from 'http://countryplans.com/smf/index.php?action=googlemap;sa=.js;count=143'; because its MIME type ('text/html') is not executable, and strict MIME type checking is enabled.

Did some research and it is a known problem -- there is malformed header in this particular Google Javascript that some newer browsers will render and some won't.

We may want to look for an alternative if cross-browser reliability is important. Google rarely fixes stuff like this. --- Or just try using another web browser - Firefox or Safari in particular.

This may have something to do with it too:

Google is deprecating/ changing services like mad lately. A lot is breaking.

The problem came along with the latest SMF forum software security upgrade and also depends on browser version. IE 11 does not display the map for example. The Member map is not an SMF product, it is an add on, known as a mod. Mod's often break when changes are made to the basic forum software. At times a mod can cause the SMF software to break. There is a "fix" available but it involves manually changing lines of code. I hesitate to do things like that as that can cause other problems at some future time if SMF or the mod vendor makes a change/update that is not compatible with the manual changes that were made. Mods can be cool, even useful. They can also be a source of frustrations.

The Member Map mod is no longer listed on the SMF mod site. Maybe it has been removed while being fixed or updated. ???  I don't know.

As long as the map continues to function in some browsers my plan is to leave well enough alone. If a new version is released then we can give that a try. I like packages that don't need a manual admin intervention best of all.

Thanks for pointing out the issue Rick
