Title: 528 SQ foot Cottage in Ontario
Post by: Ontario Lakeside on April 02, 2014, 08:11:42 PM
Hello all
I spent the summer building and the winter editing and I have some videos of our small cottage project. I thought you folks might like to see them and let me know what you think. We still have lots to do and I hope to post more video if people are interested.
I hope I can give back some inspiration to all the builders on here that have inspired me.

Thanks

Hi OL,

I just watched the Dream, the Plan, and the Build. Great work on the videos and on the project! You and I are rather like minded. I am planning to get my build started this summer, so I am a few steps behind you. I look forward to future videos and I hope you plan to post a bunch of pictures on this forum.

We value contributions in the way of assisting others with their planning and execution most highly.

Any tips for drilling into that hard rock. I will be doing the same, in similar rock, a few thousand km's west. I also plan to use a generator and a hammer drill. How deep did you go and what diameter was the hole? Did you epoxy in the rebar?

We've been using a Hilti percussion drill to drill 1.5"x24" deep holes into granite the past several weeks. Not cheap but it'll get the job done.

We started with a dewalt hammer drill. 45 minutes later we were down about 6". Then we got a hold of a Hilti hammer drill. We drilled 3/4 inch holes 6" deep. We then used a cement grout to secure 5/8" threaded rod. I dont think epoxy is required. We put one bolt in the wrong place and tried some tests to see if we could pull it out. We hammered it with a sledge, heated it with a torch, tried to unscrew it. the rock began to give way before anything moved. in the end we cut it off flush. With the Hilti we could drill 6" in about 1 minute. Amazing machine, rent one, borrow or buy. you will not regret it.

Very nice! Do you know the exact model of the Hilti hammer drill and bits used? Thank you.

IT was a Hilti TE25. the bits were from HD, not sure of the brand.

Hey everyone
I have a new video about the system we use at our cabin to get the building materials from the lake to our site. I think is quite unique. Have a look.

Very cool. I'm also off-grid, water-access in Ontario. Georgian Bay, to be specific.  Which lake are you on?

Hey all
Thanks for the kind comments

Now that its getting cooler we have been thinking about heat at the cottage.
I made a video about our new propane cook stove conversion and wood stove install.

Take care
