Hello everyone, I'm new here and I had a question about building a porch. I am building a 2 story house and I would like to build a porch off of the second story that extends over to the garage wall. The garage roof is the same height as the house, I used 2x6x18s for the garage walls.
The house has a a true 2x12 band board so I know anchoring to that won't be a problem but when the porch extends over to the garage wall there isn't a band board to anchor to. I'm not sure if I would be OK to to use lag bolts to secure the deck ledger board to the 2x6s or not. I would love to hear anyone's thoughts /suggestions

Welcome to the forum,

First I would ask if you can post some pictures (photobucket works ok) I like to see what I am working with.

Second using just lag bolts to support the weight of the porch is a risky endeavour. What you are asking for is the porch to be suspended and all the weight transfering down onto the bolts for support.

Third, If I was going to build a porch I would put 6x6 pressure treated timber on all corners, and maybe some in between depends on the size of the porch. That way the porch weight has solid footing. Keep in mind you will have additional weight there when you have people over and even might have some outside furniture as well.

Welcome once again post pictures  ;D

This is probably a silly question but I can't find where to upload pictures

People here use photobucket its free and the picture links don't die from what I am told. There also is a forum post on how to do it here.

Just because something has been done and has not failed, doesn't mean it is good design.
