My trusses have an 8' heel on them to cover the porch on bot hides of the house. I'm wondering why I bought ice dam material for the eves if they are 8' from a heated  wall?  Maybe just on the gable ends?

If you ice dam it will be from meltwater running down from the heated area and refreezing over the unheated area, then backing up and coming in. The real danger zone is from just outside to just inside of the exterior wall.

Yea, but I'm wondering if it could back up over 8 feet? (In Missouri).

It will refreeze on the porch roof just outside the exterior wall, within a foot or two and may back up and leak inside for the first foot or two, that is the zone I would protect with ice and water.

OH! So not all the way to the edge but a couple of feet beyond where the exterior wall is below the porch roof.  I get it..  Thanks
