For anyone who's not had it, there is nothing like the taste of fresh milk. The stuff they sell in the stores is not even close.

Been years , maybe like 45 or more since I've had raw milk. I did  some work on a couple of different farms on the farmers houses. They both said "To many  bugs in raw milk" They don't drink it until it's  pasteurized.

And most folks in the USA prolly would be advised to not drink raw milk as our systems are not as stout as that young kids may be.
When in doubt , build it stout with something you know about .

The whole government-fueled raw milk scare is the biggest bunch of garbage and lies to be consumed by the masses ever...

And I'm not normally so blunt. ;D

Our systems aren't stout because they aren't fortified by the good buggies in the raw milk... Heck, millions of poor kids don't even get their mom's colostrum!

It's fun milking cows as long as it not a daily 8hrs job.The kitties smell milk, they'll come running.

One of my friends used to squirt milk right into the kitties mouth, Ben..... [noidea'

....Well.... a bit of clarification needed here I think.... hmm

...not my friend himself... I meant he squirted the cows milk into the kitties mouth.... the kitty sat and opened its mouth for it...

Lucky or that would be a really weird friend, eh? ... [waiting]

...another friend was getting ready to milk his cow and was walking behind it when it was laying cow plops.... Don't ever do that because when the cow sneezes while doing that you become modern art, cow pie style....not nice.....ask my friend...... :(

I think a lot of it depends on the sanitation, PEG.  Whitlock's grandpa kept his place so clean they didn't believe the testing.

On the other hand, if they are dragging their udder through the manure like a lot of the modern factory farms in the winter then I would agree......[waiting]

There was a lady, PEG, who wanted milk for a bath to beautify her skin.

She told the dairy farmer what she wanted it for and and he said, "Do you want it pasteurized?"

She replied, "No, just up to my navel." [noidea'

WOW.... Look out... Andrew's on a rant..... [scared]

I agree, Andrew.  This whole overbearing government harassment of small farms for the benefit of big business sucks....but so many politicians and other government officials have been bought, sadly it has become "The American Way" to destroy the small farmer for the benefit of the corporate good.   My granddad is rolling over in his grave right now...... [frus]

Well ...in reality I suppose he drank beer and moonshine... not so much milk, but he still wouldn't like the government meddling with his civil rights.... the right to drink milk with any type of bug he likes....or messing with his still.... no way..... [waiting]

BTW the two farms I worked on the houses for where both family owned , family run diaries , milking under 200 hundred cows . They both have since , maybe in the last 5 years , sold out of the diary business. They both raise beef cows now , and doing  some thing with the heifer side of the business. Keeping the young stock coming to / or for other diaries . Plus some part of selling seeds for vegetables.

My point being neither of those farms where "factory" style diaries.

Some say milk is just for baby cows, but I still don't agree with what big government is doing for big factory style dairies.  They are even going after people with just one cow including a police officer up here in the mountains.  There has never been any problem with their raw milk.  They just want to stop any competition with any dairy big enough to put a picture on the back of a milk carton. [ouch]

I would drink raw milk even if it made me sick, just because they want to limit my right to do it.  :)

I worked on a dairy part time many years ago. The old farmer told me the main reason they pasturize milk is to extend it's shelf life. Since raw milk tastes so much better than pasturized they want to make sure no one knew the difference. So they banned raw milk. I grew up drinking it and I don't recall it ever making me sick. I do know when I couldn't get it anymore I lost intrest in drinking milk.

Well, that's the whole thing, too... All of that stuff about e-coli and whatever only applies to huge, unnatural "farms" with animals being forced to live in unbelievably gross conditions.

Even if a little poo from a healthy cow does manage to make it's way to your stomach, it won't kill ya'. In fact, under the right conditions, I'm not even sure if it's even all that bad for ya'..

But you don't hear about swat teams landing on the industrial farms and shutting them down when people get sick..

Nope - they only want to bully the little guys as the big guys donate too much money to those who direct them or make the laws.

Finally we did it.... I picked the cactus apples and burned the spines off of them and Sassy spent about 5 hours making Cactus Jelly.

Good stuff.  I ate some tonight on some rolls.... yum.. [hungry]

It has an interesting slightly cactus taste - kind of like Pomegranate Jelly has an interesting Pomegranate taste.... just a bit different.  :)

Looks good Glenn.

Raw milk sells are still legal in NC and SC,but it's illegal to sell it across state lines. One dairy close to me got shut down when a group of people bought a large quantity and then went across state lines and tried to sell it with the dairy farms label still on it.

Sassy

It took so long cuz I had to look for more jars, which I never found...  had to sterilize everything by boiling the jars (I used to just use the dishwasher) and various other things...

I had some of the jelly on whole wheat toast this am w/a bowl of fresh peaches.  Today I cut up 8 quarts of peaches for the freezer.  Don't know if I'll make peach jam - still have lots of peaches...  now, where in the world did I put those other jars???   ???

muldoon

Lookin good, would love to trade a jar of that jelly for something.  I may have something if your interested.

glenn kangiser

I'll have Sassy PM you, muldoon.  We were thinking of maybe putting a pepper in it,  but this time we did not.  It is good though.  :)

Always too many rules and regs, Ben.  Looking back, it might be better if they did not label it... that's probably illegal too.... [waiting]

Texas Tornado

Down here they make "Tuna" wine from the cactus fruit... 8)

considerations

Raw milk isn't usually "full of bugs" (unless the udder is infected).  Udders however, are covered with "bugs". Cows love to lay around and often in their own pies, especially if it's cold.

The morning milking included bathing each cow's or goat's udder with a wash cloth soaked in WARM soapy water and disinfectant, then a rinse so the taste couldn't get into the milk in the bucket.   They could get cranky if the wash cloth was cold,  [shocked] and anyway its hard to get them to let down their milk if your hands are cold. Then milking into a disinfected stainless steel bucket.  If the cow/goat was rude enough to stick their foot into the bucket, the milk was given to the calf/kid.

It was all about clean....like canning clean.  But the milk, if not contaminated after leaving the udder, was fine.

Sassy

Good article, Ben.  Considerations, I've never milked a cow - if Glenn gets a chance to build a stanchion we're hoping that Mama Bossy will let us milk her some, even while she is nursing.

Wellllll, I'm just a nurse, what can you expect?  And I just went through 2 weeks of ultrasound training to do ultrasounds on pregnant women...   ::)

When I 1st saw it, it pee'd & I thought, oh good, a heifer...  then I got a better look & saw a little of the umbilical cord hanging from the navel & it was damp, so I thought I was wrong & it was a bull...   d*

A sweet little heifer, how nice!
