If you don't mind what are the details on the septic system.  Did you run into any design challenges.  What is the plastic part for the effluent called?  Infiltrator or something?  Looks like a beautiful spot.

The cabin site is in West Virginia in Slatyfork about six miles from Snow Shoe Ski Resort. We are looking forward to spring getting here so we can continue working.

Mike, you are right.  It is called the infiltrator and is 200ft with a 1000 gallon holding tank per West Virginia requirements for 2 bedroom home.

That matches the current septic requirements here in CA pretty close.

It's been a long time since we have updated on our cabin building progress.  Here are some pictures that show the progress so far.  We got 3 feet of snow this weekend so we are on hold until things thaw out.  Hopefully, electric, plumbing and interior woodwork will come next.

Dave I wondered what happened to you.  I sent you a couple E-mails to check on your status but didn't get a reply.  If you would have hollered I would have given you a hand.  Doesn't look like you needed it though. Yes the snow was a little deeper toward the mountain but ours was enough to put me out of comission for a while.

Hi John!  Sorry if I missed emails.  I am not good about checking and replying regularly.  I get distracted easily.  I actually got the family to come out some and also broke down and ended up hiring some local guys to help with the roof to get it done before winter hit.  My neighbor said the mound from the plows off of Rt 219 is so high at the entrance to both our lots that we might have to hire someone with heavy equipment to just open up driveways to get to our lots.  Apparently, it's a mess.  My neighbor had some renters coming at the beginning of the week and they couldn't get in so he had to refund them $1200.  Ouch!  Hope all is well with you.  Still would love to see you out there sometime.  Have a good holiday!

Looks good... can't wait to see interior progress.

I have a question on your siding... is it beveled?  Is it lapped or tounge and groove?  Are there any issues with moisture/water getting in the joints by the way you've done it?  I like the look vs. horizontal.
Title: Re: Dave and Kim's 1 1/2 story 20x40 cabin pics
Post by: David.DiPietro on December 23, 2009, 09:58:43 AM
It's tongue and groove siding.  We are just butting the ends together.  From what I have read we shouldn't have a problem with leaking and haven't so far.  We put a 12 inch overhang around the whole house so that should help.  We are going to caulk any large cracks and cover with a sealant.

Good looking cabin.  Nice proportions.  [cool]

That's a very clever gin pole set up for raising the walls too.  It's not as complicated as some I've seen.

Does anyone know if doing this siding the way he's done it will cause any problems with water hitting the joints and getting in?   I hope it's fine the way he's done it because that's what I would like to do... and I can't imagine a problem with the overlap, but would like to get confirmation from an expert here...

As long as the T&G is dried so it won't shrink and open up the joints, and as long as the Tongue points up into the Groove above it, I don't see why there should be a problem.

cbc58,

Hi there.  We found the siding from the following website.  Seems to be a popular company and I haven't heard of any problems.  My next door cabin neighbor in WV has 1x10 tongue and groove and his cabin is 18 years old and he hasn't had any problems.  If gaps do develop, they can be caulked.  Let me know if you have any more questions.  We bought our actual siding from Twin Creeks Log Home Supply in NC.  Thanks.  Here is the link in case you are interested.....

Thanks!  Me and one other guy were able to lift the entire 40 foot section with just two of these set up.  It wasn't easy but we did it.   d*

We lucked out with the windows.  Actually bought them months before we started building since they were such a good deal and designed the house around those windows  ;)

Tks for the info.  I have used that siding vertically before and it is so easy to put up.  Was just worried about moisture/water getting in the joints -- but 18 years of no problems tells me I worry too much.  Tks for the link.  Can't wait to see the inside finish work...

I am a big fan of wall jacks, and those are very nice and simple.  Good job improvising (and saving $1000).  Cabin looks great.  Are the ladies throwing gang signs, or is it a Michael Jackson tribute band?

Thanks for sharing pictures of your fine cabin. You did a great job and your handsome family pictures could be used in an article on "happy, healthy country living".  :D :D :D

I hope some of those photos make it into the long term family album.

Really a first class job.

Germangirl, There is a bedroom on the first floor.  We used the standard plan layout except we extended the length from 30 to 40 ft.  The extra length is in the family room/living area.  The plans for the standard layout are on the forum (search for 1 1/2 story 20 x 30 cottage).

John, thank you!  Thanks for all of your support and patience with our questions.  I'll take some pictures of the outside with the finished porch next time.  It especially looks good all lit up at night.  Dave is actually talking about another project down the road sometime once we finish this one (actually, we'll probably always be doing something to this one as we are already talking about adding an island to the kitchen, lol).  We'll see.  Again, thanks!

Wow.  Everything looks great!
I have a question for you on the porch floor.  It looks like you've used T&G flooring.  Is it slightly pitched away from the house?  How will you finish it?
I'd like to do a screened porch and wanted to used T&G but was told I should use cedar decking with spaces between the planks to drain the water that will inevitably get in.  I'd much prefer to use T&G.  What are your thoughts?

Jesse I just noticed your post and I thought I would let you know that there is a solid composite T&G flooring in I think 2-1/4 width's.  I had seen it at a builders auction.  The tounge was already pre-drilled for installation.  I had never seen it before that day and i thought it was pretty neat looking stuff.  Just thought i would mention it.

Great looking place.  We are day dreaming of a 20x40 1 1/2 as well and I was curious if you could share the layout for the upstairs?  Do you have any modified plans drawn up?  Did you make the bedroom or kitchen downstairs any bigger or did all the extra go to the living area?  Just trying to get a feel for what the space is like.  Thanks for any info you can offer.

Rick I would have to wait until the next auction which will be in the fall to see if I can get a company name.  But I did find this company who advertises porch flooring in composite.  Maybe a place to start.

The 1-1/2 story (20x30) plans (http://www.jshow.com/y2k/listings/50.html) have several stair options in the booklet that comes with the plans including a full U-shaped standard code stairway. This stair does require more width than the cottage stair and thus you would probably want to build it in a longer plan like the 40' version that Dave and Kim built.

Here is more information on code stairs from the Visual Stair Guide (http://www.countryplans.com/Downloads/IRC2006.pdf) (this PDF will take a few seconds to load).

The U-shaped stair is the standard for the Universal Cottage (http://www.jshow.com/y2k/listings/57.html) plan.

Look forward to your thread Capt Mark.

Dave-
Excellent job.  This is pretty much how I plan to do mine.  I am probably a year out before starting.

Here's a link to the 20x30 1 1/2 story plan that Dave and Kim extended to 40'. An extra 10' has made everything more spacious.

Maybe someone can kelp me out - the only version of the 3D I can locate is now Ver. 9
John references the newer versions are not compatible to do plan mods. ??? That remain so or what does one do?
I want to stretch/modify this plan a wee bit more than Dave and Kim and would love to be able to do so.
Thanks and thanks again!

Hi Dave and Kim,

I am absolutely impressed by your cabin in just about every way. I cant believe this, but you have built your cabin exactly the way I have been dreaming mine to be! However, the lot we are considering may not allow us to go 40' long.

This may be a bit personal, but if you dont mind, I am curious what the total build cost was? I am in Canada, so I can assume our cost will be about 35% higher... everything north of the border is more expensive. In all likelyhood, we will build the very minimum (frame, windows, roof) and slowly finish and insulate the interior.

Best,

Rodney

Can you show a picture of how your porch roof is tied into your cabin?  I am building a 20x32  1 and half story with 12 foot walls and my main home and porch roof do not connect.  Thanks!

Yes it has been a long time.  I would imagine that you are prepared for a winter on the water with the fire boat.  Take care and keep your feet out of the water.  Look me up when you get in the neighborhood.

Thanks for sharing your build! We're breaking ground on ours this spring.
I was wondering if there was anything that you'd change if you had it to do over?

This build is such an inspiration for us! Very similar to what we are just starting.
Can you tell me about the exposed beams for the second floor joists? I saw "I joists" over the bedroom, did you just box those in at the kitchen/living area, or
are those solid wood beams in that area?
