This is a neat little program that will let you take digital picture and turn it into a tile mosaic.

I can definitely see the use for it--especially if you didn't have an unlimited supply of tiles.

One of my favorite quilts--lost in the fire--was a knitting pattern turned into a quilt.  A little dragon meant to go two or three times around a watch cap ended up about seven feet long--and the blocks were only about an inch wide.

But the fabric stash is likely to have enough in the way of colors and textures to do this.

I've played with making tile--or quilt--designs out of photos--most photo editing programs have several ways to do this--crop to a random and fairly small selection of pixels, make that into a symmetrical design, or not.  Or cut the number of pixels per inch while keeping the picture size constant.

Here's an example--existing only in photo form--I've never made it--of the former.  I think it was a stone wall in Key West or somewhere, I did not take the picture.  This was well under 1% of the area of the original.

If you got into mosaics you could do sculptures!  (this hasn't worn too well, had to have major restoration some years back--while I was looking for a picture, I found a rumor that it had been tiled by the children in the nearby special ed school--they might have helped, but hundreds of at least semi-normal adults glued pieces on it)

That's a little bigger than I had in mind!
I'm thinking more like 48"x48" as the biggest project.
That picture makes me think about tile on the trunk of a tree.
I have plenty of trees. I wonder what my wife would say if I tiled the outside of an old oak tree in the back yard.

I may stick with fiber, though.



Those guys' blender page tells you, if you ask, what percentage you are over or under 100 per cent, but if you could see your blend in action, I didn't find that.

The very little I've seen of glass tile makes me think that that's the way to go.

In the past I've always drooled over "art tiles" i.e., ceramic with designs already on them--more like buying prints instead of dyeing your own fabric.

And of course, there's always the Master, proving you can't do everything by paint by the numbers.

But he obviously had lots of colors of tile to play with.  Lots and lots of blending there.

I tiled the floor in our old house ... straight tile 'cept for a river of mosaic running down the center about 3'-4' across;  did the mosaic river in "DNA-strand" design;  two long snaky lines intertwining with pictures of stuff in the circles made by the intertwines.  All the way from the "front" (carport) door through the kitchen/main room and down the one hall to the end.

Mosaic tile is cool to do ... but it takes time.  Lots of time.    And I had a big picnic table outside covered with piles of tile, for about ... oh ... 9 months.  

But you can take PRIDE in a creation that will LAST.
