Title: 100 Amp service wire size
Post by: 325ABN on June 17, 2011, 07:55:08 AM
Currently I have a 100 amp service with a meter, disconnect and a breaker box located at the end of my driveway. I ran 4/0 - 4/0 - 2/0 wire down from the house to the meter location. Being that this wire is larger than the required size for the 100 amp service is there a way I can hook it up to the 100 amp lugs? I do not want to incur the cost of upgrading to 200 amp service at this time and the 100 amp service is plenty for now.

I don't know the details but I know it should work. I am in an identical situation and the licensed electrician I work for just ordered 200 ft. of 2/0 wire for me (ouch!) which we will be hooking up to my 100 amp service next week.

Most electrical manufactures oversize the lugs for bigger wire than what is needed. They do this so that if you have to increase the wire size due to voltage drop it is covered by the larger lug. I do know that they make a reducing lug for wires that are larger than the lug size. hope this helps.
