General Carter Ham, the commander for US AFRICOM, told Congress today that the Obama Administration would consider sending ground troops into Libya to "aid the rebels," though he insisted such a move was "not ideal."

His reasoning was, predictably, nothing to do with the danger of yet another US ground war on the other side of the planet, but because it might harm international support for the ongoing war. The US and France started the war two and a half weeks ago, and have since transferred it to NATO control.

Secretary of Defense Robert Gates indicated last week that ground troops were not on the near term agenda, saying that there would be no ground invasion "as long as I'm in this job." The promise is increasingly meaningless, however, amid talks he could be replaced by CIA Director Leon Panetta within the next few months.

I don't think we are legal to call it WWIII yet as it is not a legally declared war....

Oh yeah, but I forget.... the war an terror is not a legal war either...... guess we may as well call it WWIII as we no longer care if they are Constitutionally legal or not.

The War Powers Resolution of 1973 (50 U.S.C. 1541–1548) was a United States Congress joint resolution providing that the President can send U.S. armed forces into action abroad only by authorization of Congress or in case of "a national emergency created by attack upon the United States, its territories or possessions, or its armed forces." The War Powers Resolution requires the President to notify Congress within 48 hours of committing armed forces to military action and forbids armed forces from remaining for more than 60 days, with a further 30 day withdrawal period, without an authorization of the use of military force or a declaration of war. The resolution was passed by two-thirds of Congress, overriding a presidential veto.

Planning to drop a B61 Mod 11 tactical nuclear bomb on Libya ?

WTFukushima do we not have enough radioactive fall out from Japan ?

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), in collaboration with the U.S. Air Force Global Strike Command, recently conducted a successful surveillance flight test using a Joint Test Assembly (JTA) of the B61 Mod 11 (B61-11) Strategic Bomb.

"JTA tests demonstrate NNSA's commitment to ensuring that all weapon systems perform as planned and that systems are designed to be safe, secure and effective," said NNSA's Deputy Administrator for Defense Programs Don Cook. "The strong partnership between NNSA and Department of Defense is vital to our national security and helps enhance the way NNSA does business and manages its resources."

We are already filling the world with DU certified by our own military study as causing all kinds of deformities, mutations in our own soldiers children and health problems... until they pulled the investigator off of it.

Why should our leaders grow a brain now.... let them make the world completely uninhabitable.  Seems that is the goal.  The short sighted idiots fail to see that it will affect their offspring also.

I'm not really worried about any of that. As long as Libya has a drop of oil left we wouldn't nuke them.  They also don't have any significant allies for a world war.  Just another quagmire for oil.

I was part of an interesting conversation recently.  It was some people that said "why would the Japanese risk nuclear power" in the wake of all the problems with the fall out.  There is risk in everything.  An old proverb about a splinter and a plank comes to mind.  People can't seem to equate our choice of risks of constant war and almost a third of our governments spending to secure our own energy interests.

Glenn, don't you understand.  Lincoln suspended habeas corpus during the civil war, so that means as long as we are in a war on terror, the government can do the same to American citizens.  At least that was the precedent they cited to their Supreme Court briefs for Gitmo, and the Supreme Court agreed.  Look Obama kept it running and isn't trying anyone in civilian court anymore.  Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

You got it, Squirl.

Like us both seeing eye to eye on this will change any of it.....

Long live the war for oil, eh?
