IS IT PRACTICAL TO USE 18 FOOT BEAM OR COULD I ADD POST AND PIER TO EACH SIDE AND DIVIDE THE DIFFERENCE AND THEN STAGGER THE THE SPLICES :question

For a 4x beam you would have 2- 2x's and one plywood splice.
