How apart?
Is there a code governing this?
For some reason I am thinking 4".

- Stair balusters can have Max. 4" clear Opng between.
This is my code note on this topic.
The idea being that a baby's head would be larger than a 4" dia. ball and could not get stuck between the balusters.
Many code rules have come about from such touching accidents.
