If you use Verizon as your cellular provider, there is a desktop app available that lets you use a PC to send and receive text messages. Maybe an Apple too but I don't have one and can't say if there is or not. But you can go to this webpage (http://www.verizonwireless.com/landingpages/verizon-messages/)and download the App to your Windows PC. Try the link on a Mac and see.
You can send text messages with a real full size keyboard! There is an App in the Play Store for Android tablets too. My non-phone tablet can send and receive text messages too, using a wi-fi connection. All text messages go thru the cell phone number of course.
