Title: Universal attic joists
Post by: DavidS on April 29, 2007, 08:02:21 PM
I plan to use 2x12 joists at 1st and 2nd floors. I would like to use the 2x8 and crossing 2x4 atttic floor system. Can't the 2x8s span the distances between the second floor walls? Or is the problem tranferring the load to those walls and the 2nd floor joists?

What is the abbreviation SG at the stair window and bathroom window.

Thanks.

SG = safety glass (usually tempered) that is needed at stair and bath windows.

If you use the 2x12 full span floor josts (or engineered full span joists) then you cannot have a centerline bearing wall adding the attic loads to the middle of the 2nd floor joists. If you do the centerline beam and bearing wall option then you can add these loads and transfer them down through the beams and posts to footings below.
