   Yup a crane,

Good operator as well. He always does a fine job, he could scratch your back with that thing!
When in doubt , build it stout with something you know about .

MountainDon

and the truck's not a beater. That says a lot about the guy too.

But not too flashy. Too flashy in a work truck is not good in my book.
Just because something has been done and has not failed, doesn't mean it is good design.

For a moment I thought the crane was lifting the lid on the Barbecue. Seemed a bit of an overkill. ;)
None of us are as smart as all of us.

About 12 years ago I had a truck  just like that , same company laying on it's side after it tipped over delivering one truss they shorted my due to a sky light. That driver no longer works there , BUT NOT due to that incident. He had a big load on his trailer and it was blocking his outriggers from deploying so he WRONGLY thought he could just keep the crane / boom  fairly straight up and down , WRONG answer!!! d*

Over she came busted the hip and a few commons on the garage roof , the  boom hung on the corner ( good strong framing ) of the garage he bailed off the operator platform , and over she went.

He crawled back in the cab to shut down the motor and get his cell phone to call the office and after a bit the hydraulics bled off and the boom shifted and fell the rest of the way to the ground , bent the boom arm . Quite a day , he said to his boss on the phone " Are you sitting down? If not,  you should , I just tripped the crane over!"  :o

They used another one of thier rigs to right the truck and the cut the boom arm with a torch to suck it back in for the drive home.

We didn't finish that roof that day  ::)

So now I CHECK the outriggers , just in cae some other driver wants to kill me  ;)

John check your PM 's buddy.

Glenn, with all your toys, you got one of those yet?

If you do, can I borrow it?

I have 2 big ones and a little one, Tony, but not as big as that one.  I have one more old one that I never use but not that big either.  My bigger one I seldom use goes to 41 feet out - 51 or so up 10000 near the truck.

The big one in early underground complex days.  Kenworth with Hiab Knuckle Boom.

The one I use most often goes 31 feet out - 41 or so up. 10000 near the truck.

Here I am putting large beams inside our local Sixth Street Cinema.

The one I use on my daily use truck goes 16 feet out, about 22 up and 4000 near the truck but I limit it to around 2000 the way I have it set up.

...and a drilling rig, not used for a long time but could be made usable with a weeks work. ::)

I have 3 that need work but could go.

I got a pix of my forklift stretched out the other night.  Good for those high spots but easily tipped over up here in the mountains.  I haven't done it....yet.

Redoverfarm

Used one just like that Glenn setting the last five logs on the cabin. And yes I almost did turn it over. Not the weight but the incline on a slope. Had the hydrollic jacks to compensate but didn't help. Wasn't long back down that one and finding another approach.  Scary feeling though. Got it done anyway.

The old rig. Are we seeing the antique yard now?

glenn kangiser

Yup -- I know that feeling....Can't wait to get solid on 4 wheels.

There is a triangle made by the top of the lift and the two tires where the CG is supposed to reside.  Get outside of that and you may be going for a ride.  There is only so much compensation available with the hydraulic frame tilt.

The rig -- technically an antique is still considered to be near current production, but they barely make any of them anymore.

I don't remember if I even have a pix of the old one with some wood members on it.  Lots of the old stuff is in the same area with that rig.

Couldn't find the rig but here are some of my treasures -- still big toys I guess-- I can't lift 'em.

A couple Ajax Oil field engines - 6K lbs each - a guess

My old blow rig

A couple McCormick -Deering parts tractors.  I have another that doesn't run that my granddad used.

A monitor windmill pump jack engine I think.

Various antique oilfield engines.

What make of drill rig ??

Dimitri

glenn kangiser

That rig is a Speed Star 71.  I have two of them - both pretty ugly but with hydraulic pull downs.  I also have a Speed Star 72 w/100,000 lb pull downs.  I had it to 1550 feet on a clean out.
