I built a 4'x10' workbench 10 years ago that still works great for me; and it's portable (read that as reasonably easily movable).   All it is is just a 2x4 framework with an extra 2x4 (ten foot) running down the middle and covered with 3/4" particle board.  It sits on top of three saw horses.  This thing has been used for everything so it has that well used look.

It was originally built to help put together a full sized airplane kit (Zenith Zodiac 601).   As such it has about 10,000 rivet holes drilled in it - so the table looks like it has the measles - kinda gives it some extra character.
