Title: ceiling height change 20'x34' universal
Post by: rdzone on May 14, 2007, 12:14:55 AM
Is it ok to change the ceiling height on the 1st floor of the universal cottage  from 8 feet to 9 or 10 feet to make it feel more open?  Are there any major changes that would need to be made?  I am about to start framing the walls and wanted to see if it would be ok to make the walls taller?  Any information would be greatly appreciated.

The main consequence of changing the wall height in the Universal Cottage is the stair. You will have to either add risers or make the steps taller. Perhaps the easiest method would be to add two winders to the landing and keep the riser height under 8".

Here's the best stair tutorial:

Check with your inspector as they may have other options.

thanks John that is the only thing I could think of that needed to be changed.  I bought 10' 2x6 cheaper than I could buy 9' 2x6 studs....my wife works for lowes.  I don't want to cut them all down to 9' if I don't have to.  I think 10' walls are in my future.
