I have a large oak protruding through the deck of my cabin. The main tree reaches far upwards, there also existed a rather large (12 in diameter) "offshoot" eminating from right next to the main tree, as in, it seems to be part of the main tree. The offshoot was at an extreme angle and cracked, thus I had to cut it down a few years ago. The stump that was left has grown a bright orange fungus during winters. I wish to preserve the health of the main tree. Should I scrape all the fungus off, or even use a chisel to remove material to reach a "clean", non fungus disturbed level and paint it with what someone here referred to as "black stump paint"??? I am unsure how to treat this, and suggestions greatly appreciated!
Just a point - it is likely dead - therefore growing the fungus.
I was told to not leave a stump long enough to hang my hat on. Possibly taking it off will help the tree, but you better wait for other people that know more than me on this.
