Title: sonotube piers
Post by: dogneck on June 09, 2008, 09:54:57 AM
I have dug 7 holes so far.   I'm doing the 14x24 plan. Pier foundation.   I dug for 10" tubes rather than 8".   The soil was about a foot of clay, then the last three foot is some type of shale. (I can go 36" down or 48" down- here in WV, I was told the frost line is about 28").   I broke all this rock out with a breaker bar and took about four hours of digging on each hole.   The problem is that two of the holes seem to be filling overnight with about one foot of water.   The other holes are dry.   (we had very hard unusual rains here over the last two weeks.).     Is this of concern?    How can I pour the concrete sonotubes with water filling-in.

We just sucked the holes dry with a Shop-Vac before pouring. From what I learned here, concrete will cure fine underwater, so some seepage after the pour won't hurt anything.
