Deck ledger design
The idea for this ledger design came about after seeing and replacing many rotten ledgers and exterior siding. The principle is to allow for a water drainage plane without interrupting the exterior siding. This design works well on single wall construction. It can also be used on bevel siding with a beveled shim/spacer.
-Ledger is PT
-Backing shim/spacer -house shaped to allow no standing water and are made of 1/2" PT CDX
-Backing shims are brad nailed from backside before installation near approximate area of attachment hardware.
-I like to use a 5/16 GRK screw – rated to about 600 lbs – expensive but well worth the cost due to its labor saving design. No pre-drilling is required, have yet to strip a screw head and can't remember when I had trouble starting one.
-Exterior siding is primed before ledger installation
- Deck board is also held away from wall to maintain a drainage plane.
