Looking for a place in East Texas if anyone knows of anything. My sister lives SE of Palestine and I'd like to be near her if possible. Small acreage, or at least cheap. ;)

East Texas is really pretty... have family in and around Paris and Clarksville. I suggest going on realtor.com and then narrow your search for land properties (as opposed to houses) and the specific region you want. They also have a feature that allows you to choose which, if any, surrounding areas you are interested in. This is one way to do it if you aren't immediately in the area so that you can narrow it down before making the trip. Good luck!
Hey Homegrown, I got stuck in a dingy little truck stop in Paris, Texas for about 2 weeks - around 1982. Couldn't get a load out to California so took one to Georgia to get moving. The only load I could get out of Georgia went directly back to Paris, Texas. Finally deadheaded to Kansas for a load to Phoenix then figured that was close enough to home so deadheaded back to Fresno.
Trucking wasn't always glorious.
;D It was probably the same truck stop our school bus broke down at when I was on a band trip to FL in high school! The outlying areas around there are really pretty, though. And land is relatively cheap. (I say this comparing to where I live currently between Chicago and Milwaukee, as well as to the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, or even the OKC area.) And it is prettier than any of the above. I was looking at land down there recently when my husband was considering taking a job there... found a gorgeous spot and then he decided not to take the job.
I think it is the only one there. I had to pretend to be from the south because all the other truckers were running down them damn yankees.
There was a very mentally unstable lady hanging around there with kids. Some tried to help her out but seems she wouldn't take any help. One of the truckers said she was probably a damn yankee. Long live the Revolution. ;D
ha ha ha ha ;D Texans! I'm from Oklahoma, and every weekend, the state parks in the southern part of Oklahoma are overrun with Texans, and my husband used to joke that they were like cockroaches...he'd say that "someone must've turned the light on" in Texas because they'd all fled their homeland.
Now your gonna stir up the Texans, Homegrown, and we'll have the little critters scurrying everywhere. Good thing you're a girl. Maybe they'll let you get away with it. ;D

I have a lot of kinfolk who are Texans...that part of the family tree doesn't branch all that much down there, though!
Just for the record, I think it's OK to pick on Texans.... I seem to recall *ahem* someone here talking about "Okie-rigging" something? As an Okie through and through, I've learned to take that as a compliment.

All I know about is Arkansas and my ancestors. My great granddad tried to move there when they came over from Lithuania.
Shortly they lost 5 kids to --I think it was Malaria. The doc told them that Arkansas was incompatible with life as Kangisers know it. :-?
Granddad sent his hounds on up ahead of them to Oregon where the Salmon were so thick you could walk across their backs to cross the river. The hounds promptly all died from Salmon poison. (Salmon Flukes kill dogs). :(
Most of my folks settled in Oklahoma because of the government forcing them to. It didn't agree with all of them so well, either. But through the years, I guess we sort of got accustomed to it... However, this one side of my family has this Texas sickness... seems that all the men in that side of the family just can't stay away from there. Never have figured out what it is that draws them there...

Most of my family is Native American... on my Dad's side, there's also a few Germans... guess that makes me a Heinz57? Oh well, mutts make the best pets, right?
You got it. I am a mix of several also - Notably Lithuanian with a German name GGF probably German GGM Lithuanian -a quality product imported from Lithuania ::) - Maybe Scottish or something -- My grandmother was a Mann. Not many can say that. :)

Grandma didn't have much problem with whiskers but both her sisters did, and they always wanted to kiss the little boy (read "me") when our family came over to visit. They usually shaved but that made it scratch even worse. Killer 5 o'clock shadow. :-/ ;D

I have to throw in a good word for the people of east Texas. Years ago during a dry spell, I worked for JCPenney catalog. I was a troubleshooter for mail/telephone orders that went awry, mis-shipments, broken, damaged, disappeared... The folks in TX were the most polite I dealt with. They insisted on their rights, having their problems rectified to their satisfaction and so on, but they were always saying, please, thank you, yes sir, no sir. Fine people to deal with. It's hard not to like people who are polite even when they're pi$$ed off. Even if they might have been grandmas with whiskers.
Honestly, I agree, Don... a lot of them are probably related to me anyway so I'd best not pick on them too hard. They may not have much, but they'd give you the shirt off their own back if you needed it.

The web site Lands of America, and Lands of Texas are decent at finding properties I've found. East Texas, especially NE Texas has some pretty good deals on beautiful land these days.
But in NE Texas you'll want to make sure about water if your wanting a well. There is no good aquifers to drill to in some wide swaths up there.
