Title: Floor joist sizing
Post by: peter nap on September 11, 2007, 05:37:28 PM
The plans I'm working with for the floor joists calls for 2X10" supported every 12'.

I'm wondering if I will have enough support if I use 2X8 supported every 6'.
The reason I'm wondering is I can get a super deal on 2X8's from a builder who needs to make payroll.

2X10's have to go upstairs.

Here's a handy-dandy online calculator you can use to compare different joist sizes, spacing, spans, etc.

http://www.awc.org/calculators/span/calc/timbercalcstyle.asp?species=Spruce-Pine-Fir&size=2x12&grade=No.+2&member=Floor+Joists&deflectionlimit=L%2F360&spacing=12&wet=No&incised=No&liveload=50&snowload=-1&deadload=10&submit=Calculate+Maximum+Horizontal+Span

Here's another that is useful if you foresee installing ceramic tile or natural stone flooring.

Thanks Don! I bookmarked them both. ;)

Looks like I can do it and Old Sonny gets to pay the boys! :-/ This is the sad part of our present economy. I've noticed a lot of subs selling tools lately.
