As a Cessna 170 driver I can really appreciate this guy's skill (and intestinal fortitude)

Cool - Reminds me of some of the places I landed in Mexico.
A interesting Y-tube video
put Dead stick takeoff in the search field
the guy does some insane landings and takeoffs from ridge tops also
I practiced vertical takeoffs during a high wind event at the Madera Airport. Roughly 45 mile wind down the runway, C205 (210-5) full flaps and hand on the throttle to match forward speed to lift so I could stay stationary over the runway while climbing to pattern altitude.
I was questioning my former instructor about trying it as I had read about Alaska Bush pilots doing it to make wilderness rescues on mountainsides with no runway.. He said get out there and do it. He was former USAF and was one of the best instructors available. I had a blast and got some good experience for a couple of hours. I announced my actions and moved out of the way for arriving and departing aircraft. :)
Another vertical takeoff...
