Title: Weather related information
Post by: MountainDon on July 27, 2007, 01:03:40 AM
On a recent visit to a forest service lookout tower a few miles from my mountain property I learned about some remote reporting weather stations the forest service uses in their forest fire prevention and suppression work. I find this especially interesting as there are hourly updates available with many more reporting stations that those offered by the mainline online weather services.

In my case the popular services have nothing closer to my mountain location than 30 to 40 miles. In mountains that can lead to big differences. The links below have a station (JESN5) that is within a few miles of our place. I just find it interesting to be able check up on the current, max and min temp, precipitation levels, winds, humidity, etc. from home.

Start by clicking on the map to find stations near you. On the left sidebar you can choose the network. Sometimes when there are many stations it helps to go one by one to make the map more readable. Once you find the best one for you bookmark that and you can click right to it. If you register (free last I did) you can access records going back years (depends on station).
