Title: 14x24 Builders cottage ?'s
Post by: Snowman6479 on May 04, 2009, 08:04:01 PM
I like the builders cottage and would like to build it on my property for visiting mother in laws and such.. But I have a few questions on it.. in standard for how much room is in the loft for moving around will I at 6 foot tall be banging my head getting in and out of the bed?  I have been looking at the builders gallery and looking at pictures but have not seen and good shots of the loft area.. does anyone have any laying around that I could get a better look at it?  Thanks Jarrad

We built the 14x24 with a 12/12 roof (45 degrees), so that we would have a little more headroom.  We also used 10 foot walls, and built the loft floor at 8 feet (bottom of the joists).  That gives a little more headroom in the loft.
Here is a picture of me (5'9") standing on the loft floor, framing the roof.  You can see that you might bump your head, depending on where you get out of bed!

You can go to our website at http://www.arizonaranch.org (http://www.arizonaranch.org) and specifically http://www.arizonaranch.org/?p=1003 (http://www.arizonaranch.org/?p=1003) to see more of the loft.
Good luck... Randy

One way to think about a 12/12, every foot in is a foot up. If its 13' wide inside dimension then the inside ridge is 6-1/2' above the plate. For each foot on either side of the ridge the ceiling is a foot lower. This also applies outside to overhangs for clearance to screen doors and window tops.
