I need a block heater for one of my trucks which happens to be my first frequent use diesel truck. I've quickly learned that I need a block heater here in Northern NH. Does anyone have any opinion on what type to use? I've seen magnets, pads and others that I can't tell where they go.
Any opinions or advice would be appreciated.
Peter
I don't know what type truck you have but here is a forum I check out whenever I need information for my Dodge. Do a search there - they have tons of stuff.

or Call Gus (Farmboy's Diesel) where I get my parts - North Carolina. He's always helpful and reasonable. Number is on his site.

Welcome to Farmboys Diesel
My recommendation would be one like I had in my diesel Toyota Land Cruiser back up in Canada. It was plumbed into one of the heater hoses. It had to be mounted vertically and had a valve mechanism inside that would allow the heated water to circulate throughout the engine block and heater core. That was a nice side bonus; heat from the heater right away! It worked well enough that having it on for a only few hours in the morning (timer actuated) let that baby start easily even at -35 degrees.
I did a quick google and found this

Hope it helps you out.
I also found that using a multigrade diesel approved synthetic engine oil helped immensely in cold weather starting. No idea what's available today though.
