I'm curious about  higher ceilings for the feel of  more space.   On the two story farm house, can you raise your elevation without  messing up anything.  First thing that comes to my mind is the stairs.

Yes, the main change needed to raise ceilings to 9' would be in the stairs. You will want to add two risers. One way to do that is to add two winders at the landing.

You could also reconfigure the footprint of the stair for many other tread options. You need to have a Min. of 6'-8" under any projections of the floor system above.

I wouldn't want to alter the riser or tread lengths and think the winders are suitable.  One winder on each run still leaves me a landing in between. (I think?)  Finally, the headroom is unaffected; right?
Just wanted a more open effect,  keyholefarmhouse :)

Thats right you just add two winder steps into the landing of the stair.

decided I don't like the idea of winders or of changing the stair design.  Will stick with 8' ceilings, but now I'm wondering about open joists.  Has anyone seen or done this?
still curious, keyholefarmhouse :P
