Title: Home Designer
Post by: CajunCubsFan on March 01, 2015, 11:52:43 PM
Hello, I am new to this forum but not new to home design. I have been a home designer for over 14 years. I have designed big and small homes. But for my personal home I have yet to design my own. We are thinking really hard about building a pier and beam home on family land and cut living costs. The thing I am having trouble with is figuring out how much it will cost per square foot. I know that's a loaded question but we are scared to jump out there and do this with out knowing costs. Any help?

here is an article about estimating costs.

For a long term family home I would think twice about doing a pier and beam foundation. These days newer codes require engineering in many areas and some insurance companies are not writing policies for this type of house. In other parts of the country they are more common and may not have such restrictions. But a few extra dollars spent on a concrete foundation will likely be seen as reassuring to a future prospective buyer.
