Quote from: Ernest T. Bass on June 22, 2007, 11:01:40 PMWe're going to try building a cob bathtub, and I was wondering if anyone has any ideas for the best way to waterproof it. We framed the rough shape of the tub with wood, and plan on cobbing the whole thing soon. I read of a lady who sealed a tub with hemp oil and had good results, but problems with leaking around the drain forced her to take it down. We plan on using hemp oil a lot in the house, but I'm not sure if it's THAT water resistant. We'd rather not have to reapply the oil every six months or something like that, also.. I was wondering if a lime plaster type of finish might be the way to go?

Any thoughts?
Andrew
When waterproofing clay pots I have found pitch the be the best at waterproofing. I am here looking for the same answer because a pitch tub would be pretty but I have seen lots of cob tubs that look great but I don't know what they use. I've seen then in wite and tan paints

I'm happy to see this forum still thriving.
I might need to change my username as we have relocated to KS.  I have plenty of new property projects in mind and I know of no better place to get info.  I can tell I have a lot of your projects to catch up on.

Not sure what to say other than remember things can be replaced, people can't, so remember to be thankful that you and your family are safe......

Version 3.4.7 - 02.01.2024
- Updated the Columns tab of the Global Settings with new parameters.
- Added glazing color and opacity parameters to the Sheathing tab of the Global Settings.

The Columns tab now includes Custom and Blank under Column Type.

Up until now the glass color and opacity has been hard coded in to the plugin, now the user can adjust these values if desired.

Version 1.4.1 - 01.31.2024
- Improved the serial number verification logic within the License tab of the Global Settings.
- Updated the javascript logic within the License tab of the Global Settings.
- Added standard PVC (Schedule 80) electrical conduit sizes into the custom wire library.
- Fixed a minor bug with the edit wire profile logic of the wire module.

It turns out the outer diameter and bend radius of schedule 80 conduit is the same as schedule 40, only the wall thickness is different.  I learn something new everyday.

Dang!!  I have little of value to say.. I'm very sorry it happened.  Thanks for sharing with others, we all now have a chance to re-think whatever precautions we have in place for all hazards.

Did it happen at night?  Perhaps you were lucky to be away.

I hope your spirit mends fully.

Built it in 2006. I remember the heat we took when I said I was using screws instead of nails. Well, The old house held up to everything nature could throw at us. F-4 tornado, major ice storm, freezing cold, sweltering heat, and we and we came out just fine. Kept improving the land we owned. (38 acres)
Yep, we held up to everything, and then, a lousy squirrel brought it to an end.
We were visiting my brother in Fl. when I got a call from my friend. Told me the house had burned to the ground.
Investigators determined that a squirrel had gotten into the eve and chewed the main entrance wire.
I'm crushed and I just don't have it in me to build another house.

Wood screws (with the metal and neoprene washers) through the flats to the sheathing.  Self drilling metal-to-metal shorter screws (with the metal/neoprene washers) through ribs where one rib overlaps the rib on the other panel. The screws do not penetrate the sheathing. Those same screws are used for securing rake end trim, snow guards, etc. .
