Title: Longer ridgeboard
Post by: ray_in_kentucky on May 31, 2005, 04:23:33 PM
I am building a 12 x 16 shed and will need a ridge board about 2 feet longer due to overhangs.  Is it possible to make this from 2 pieces without compromising the structure?  should the joint fall at a rafter or between 2 rafters with a scab?  Thanks

I would suggest between rafters .... near the center of length of the building.

When I needed a 24" ridge board, I used plywood on each side to splice two 12' 2x12s.  Strung a line and braced the middle to eliminate the minor sag.

Started the rafters from both ends and did the center rafter pair last.  When I removed the plywood, to do the last pair, the ridge board ends didn't move.
