Title: Bigger windows or what PEG688 been up to lately.
Post by: PEG688 on January 27, 2009, 12:04:51 AM

So I been busy , I started a new job a few months ago, it's been a good gig. More money , but I lost a few bennies , and gained a few so all in all it's been a plus side job change.

I really like the guys I work with and the  main boss and the project managers.

We doing a little shack down on a local water way ,  it has a few details some of you may want to add to your places , such as bumped out windows , swooped roof-let at the gable ends , crown molding , plinth blocks, corbels,  copper standing seam bay window roofs  and the such.

The copper roofs get placed over these,

It a long way down ,

Another gable swoop roof-let area ,

Oh ya and turrets every house needs two right?

The views not bad either ,

You always get into the cool stuff, PEG -- just 'cause you're the pro.  ::)

Neat - probably rather expensive details if you don't do your own, I assume.

Extremely expensive. Did I mention the elevator to the third floor  :o

Pretty much all top of the line materials Thur-out.

But it's fun to take the challenge of it all :)

Cool - it helps when the money is not much of an object, however some of them can be rather hard to please.

This must be up north, I don't see the hills in the view covered with homes.  Ferry in the background... Anacortes??
Someone still has money. This is a single res.?

I have 7 house starts lined up. All up north.

I was about to PM you last night, to ask what you were up to.  Then I saw you have posted here and there, so not as long a hiatus as I thought.  I was offline for about 6 months while we couldn't afford or justify internet, so I wonder what keeps some others away (maybe just detoxing for a while).  As always, great work.  One of the things that stinks about not being in an affluent coastal town anymore, not as many chances to do this kind of cool stuff.

Glenn, sometimes money is no object for people, but they act like they need to go hire border brothers cause that's all they can afford.  That's the worst kind of client, IMO!

Progress althought slow has been made.

The standing seam copper roofs go above the lower units , they should get here this late next week.

The roof-lets finally got back from Ok. where they where 'coppered out'. We've made some progress inside and out.

The weathers been a factor , spring showers slow painter progress which in turn slows carpenter work as we ( carpenters 0 are installing all the painted trim then allowing the painters to do thier thing before we install the stained siding , so we have to 'jump around' more than we'd like.

That being said we've put a dent in the siding work , still a lot to do , about 1/2 way done , but the hard to stage sides are just about done. Except for the two turrets that will be hard to stage , but easy to side once staged up.

This piece was fun! One of the project mangers / carpenters cut and installed this piece , it appears to be running down hill to the right! I have to check this on Monday , maybe it's just the camera angle ? I hope I took this photo 'at arms length' from the staging , pointing the camera back at the house , so it could  very well be how I held the camera , I hope!

Judging by where the bottom of that siding hits the molding it looks straight to me.. How do you even cut that though? Scribe onto a template first? Really amazing work!

Seth and I where chatting as he was working his way up between the windows while I did the mitered outside corner  back to the window pieces and I said " I'd use a card board template " which is what he ended up doing. A Bosch jig saw was used to cut out the waste.

So a piece of card board off one of the fart fan boxes and a set of scribes or dividers as some folks call them.

Dividers or scribes,

Multi finger deal ,

Whether that tool would have worked I'm not sure . Would it be the right size , could you hold it level enough to get a good reading , yadda yadda yadda. That and  beside the fact we didn't have one on hand. Anyway we worked it out OK with the card board template.  ;)

Thanks for the kind words on our work :)

Hi Peg,
Outstanding work! But then we expect that from you.

I am curious about one thing. Where the standing seep intersects the
flap there apears to be a dent in the flap which then distorts the flap. I am
assuming it is a weld or something like that, but it doesn't seem right.
Of course that has been said about me too....

Bruce
Title: Re: Bigger windows or what PEG688 been up to lately.
Post by: PEG688 on March 29, 2009, 09:15:35 PM

Ya there are a few crimps at the caps over the standing seams and maybe a buckle in one photo at the sweep. I did NOT notice that buckle , till you mentioned it , so I think either it's a camera glare issue or so slight that from the ground or the h now taken down staging that it is very slight.

But all in all as it gains patina and copper character it will blend in and be as I some times say " A work of art!" Who by the way seems to follow me around , art that is  :) Lil joke there  [cool]

There will be two each , 220 volt "crab lights", about a 8 or 10" in diameter fixture ,  mounted on the channel side to spot light the lower deck down on the old railway bed and the water :o

It's a turret that looks like a light house :)

It's real stone , cut sort of like bricks , or at least cut to  be laid  like brick . I'm not sure what it really is specifically.

The masons did a fine job !  As have all the trades , the painter are really good as well. All Ukrainians, the painters.

This is what they meant by moving up in the company??   d*

I got the larger sills installed Friday so now the upper windows can get wrapped. That process starters on Monday, hopefully I'll be done by the end of the week. Mitered corners out of 5/8 " Okoume plywood so the wrap looks to be one piece, so a notch "L" shaped cut around the window neatly cut as there will be no trim , the plywood panel will be the trim, so it's gotta fit tight / right. Then  the real trick is to mark the back of the mitered corner top and bottom , take the sheet  back down into the cut station I made to hold the plywood very flat and cut the 22 1/2 deg. miters , check the fit , back and front , all edge prime the  ply then reinstall for good.

  Piece of cake right :)

Hopefully all not done fighting a 10 knot wind while walking 25 or 30 feet above ground  c*

Well that stone started on the ground and went up about 16 feet.

This turrets on the other side of the house, it has a wood deck about 5 ' above grade , then the lower floor about 12' then the roof over the lower floor that the pump jacks are sitting on , a standing seam metal roof that needed to be protected and also a pad layed down to stand the pole on, the poles then had to be held some how off the turret roof , also standing seam metal , access to the staging at times is via  ladder setup on the first floor metal roof.

So believe me the stone guys had it easier on the south turret than this North turret setup.

BTW the north side is on a channel/ water way into a oil refinery , east of the state ferry landing , it's quite cold even on warm days , generally the guys working on the south side / protected from the breeze , work in short sleeve shirts , while the north side guys are working with watch caps and heavy jackets.

Rarely is the south side colder , prevailing winds weather all hit the north side and bring that 45 deg. water into play, add a few knots of breeze and your teeth chatter!!! North is the Frazer river valley of BC.

About a month outside , one more of those bumped out gable end window set-ups with the swooped gable above.

Maybe more than a couple of  months,,,,,,,,,, if the street vacation we're asking for is granted , if that gets OK'ed the entry area (which I haven't shown yet, it's to the left or west of the south side (stone faced lower) turret) we could get three more months of outside work out of it.

Then we'll go inside after drywall is finished.  The inside is getting lots of pre drywall stuff going on as well right now.

Well along with other things inside and out we took down the N. turret staging today so here it is without a bunch of monkey shine in the way.

One thing we did find when I thought Lets wash and clean off any caulking , paint , grime , junk ,etc that a window would normally do was 7 scratches on that most LH piece of glass , on the outside pane.

So we pulled the interior stops ,cut the glazing tape and caulk , then pulled the glass out scraped it clean , applied some tape so it can't re-stick to any glazing tape , or what ever we cleaned all the crap off , but it would only take a wee lil bit to stick the glass . Then we put the scratched piece back in place until the replacement piece comes in 4 or 5 weeks.

What a bitch that job would have been had we not caught the scratches BEFORE we pulled the staging down.

This way all the re-glazing can be done from the inside.

PEG:
I saw your plywood connectors for the top of the pump jack columns to the roof.  Did you have to punch new holes in the metal roof to connect the plywood, or did you remove existing screws and go through the same screw holes?

I will have to set up pump jacks to side my gable and want to do something similar to your work with my metal roof.

Now that you're finished, have you got any other words of wisdom in using this method of pump jack stabilization at the roof line?

thanks

Did you have to punch new holes in the metal roof to connect the plywood, or did you remove existing screws and go through the same screw holes?

Removed existing screws,  the holes I made where slotted to "pick-up" any slop in where the roofer placed his screws.

When we removed the brackets we drove a wedged piece back into the hole as the screws we used on the brackets where pretty large , the added wood allowed the gasket-ed roof screw to get a good bite.

I will have to set up pump jacks to side my gable and want to do something similar to your work with my metal roof.

Your issue will be you'll be running with the ribs of the roofing , what we've done in places like that was to use a 2x8 screwed thru the same  type of hole where the roofing was screwed down , we wrapped the 2x8 with carpet pad and used long stout screws thru that hole. The weight of the 2x8 and carpet pad works well to hold the pole . We used the normal  metal bracket that comes with the pump jacks.

Now that you're finished, have you got any other words of wisdom in using this method of pump jack stabilization at the roof line?

All in all our set-up was solid and user friendly , one of the carpenters who worked with me setting it up and also working on the turret with me said  " That worked out WAY better than I thought it would when you where telling us about your plan"

I said "Well sonny you gotta have faith"!  , or some such wonderful quirky comment!  :)

While I don't really approve of large homes I do approve of quality. Built to last is better than the quick built crap that will need to be built again in 30-40 years. Nicely done.

 Photo from the water,

I was sent this photo by the owners of a wooden boat I posted a photo of on Wooden boat forum , they where nice enought to take this while passing by. I sent them some more photos of thier boat underway as they pass by. They run a charter outfit in my area. So a win win , what goes around can some times come around it would seem.
Sometimes in a good way  :)

It's a month or so old , but shows about where we are in the build.

I was down at this job site today to pick up some gear , took a few photo's , the boys are making some progress,

View from the entry way looking toward the dinning room and kitchen, hardwood guys are gluing and nailing the flooring down, the MDF is being , or been pretty much prepped for priming in some of the areas that are shown in the photos.

One thing about living in the PNW, you can't buy nice weather, but you can make a nice home for entertainment....

Nice work, PEG and crew... :)

Thanks , BTW our weathers been about the best in the nation for months. Clear and sunny for about a week, hardly any snow this winter, things are blooming  Cherry trees , Rodies , Tulips , Crocus etc. Cut the grass last weekend and the garden may be going in next weekend , never planted in Feb , YET!

Been quite nice here lately.

Of course weather is subject to change.

Interesting details there Peg.  [cool]

Is that flooring on the dining room ceiling?

I don't see MDF being mentioned a whole lot on this site.  How is it better than plywood for those applications in the pics?

And have you used MDF for other applications?  Would you do it again?

Thanks

Is that flooring on the dining room ceiling?

It's vertcal grain Hemlock T& G 1 x6. With a V -matched edge on one face we're using that face on the stained ceilings , and a small raduis on the other face which is the face we're using showing on the painted ceilings . So the same type of boards , but flipped over depending on the finish, painted or stained ,  the design team selected.

I don't see MDF being mentioned a whole lot on this site.  How is it better than plywood for those applications in the pics?

MDF is a great substrate for paint grade trim, the exceptions to that are "wear area" like window sills, plinth blocks at door ways , etc, there we use either VG Hemlock or D. Fir.  Also on the small trim details you see MDF isn't as good as wood at holding small details so we use wood , Hemlock mainly, pre made trim sold in bulk is cheaper than making our own.

So MDF has it uses, plywood would not paint well and is more costly , the painter prep time is longer IF plywood has to be used , I think in the curved stairwell area we used bender ply, all the lam's run the same way and the ply can be bent into a tube quite easily if required.

And have you used MDF for other applications?

Yes, many times. Flat painted panels on doors and finsished end panels comed to mind , with a Poplar frame around it. poplar is a great paint grade wood to use with MBF, MDF is very stable , doesn't "move" like lumber panels so in many cases it is the material to use for a flat , or raisded panel , if you have the tooloing to raise panels.

Would you do it again?

  Yes , see above.

For paint grade use MDF is sometimes the best choice. It is dusty as hell to machine, so care, dust protection , vac systems , etc  and lots of clean up, are required.

I remember my son using MDF for things - boxes for the wall mounted TV's at the  Lucky Chances Casino in Colma, CA, now that I think about it. but he was more of an artist like you, PEG, rather than a wood butcher like me.

They took a nice totally smooth professional looking finish.

Wow, very, very nice!  You can see that tons of skill, time & work went into that home...  did you say how much it is costing to build?   :o

No,  Sassy we don't talk about that :-X  Just maybe close to 4 or 5 mil , but thats subject to change as we change things a lot!

You have to some how get over what it's costing and just do what they ask you to do. It's trickle down economics at it's best.

And to re touch on MDF it would be a poor choice in a summer or winter type use cabin. It needs to be kept warm , or at least not let to get damp , or left unheated for long periods.

But the same is true of the hardwood floors in this house IF the house goes unheated for months , the floors would  well and buckle , it's has radiant floor water or hydronic heat ( I hate that term as it's a buzz word today) my Dad installed water heat years ago , most homes in NE have water heat , but using "Hydronic" makes it cool I guess).

And yes Hydronic spelled wrong ,,  I think ???

I did have a photo of the rounded stair well and the bender ply,

the joints will be covered by battens that will make to paneled look, just like in the stairwell above , the window trim will become "part of" the bigger paneled walls , it extends into the library / sitting room at the top of the stair , one seamless "look" is the theme / idea.

You maybe  can't see it but the texture of the ply is way more "open" so the painters will have to fill and sand , fill and sand to get that surface smooth like the MDF's,  so way more labor for the same look. And under paint the less "fillers" the less likely said fillers fail / come loose/ swell , etc.
