16 x 28 Cottage rafter tie size

If building the 16 x 28 cottage (from Plan Help website) without the loft, and putting the rafter ties every 4' in the bottom 1/3 of the rafters, what size would they need to be?  Would they be the same as in the 20 x 30 single story plan?  I would be building an 8/12 roof pitch rather than the 12/12 in the plan.

A well-nailed 2x6 would be sufficient as a tension tie. Check with your inspector as some areas no longer allow ties on every other rafter but require it on each rafter pair.

Alternatively you could use a structural ridge beam (could be built-up from 2xs). This could span the open area with a full cathedral, but it needs a support post at each end.

Thank you John.  As it turns out, a ridge beam is required because of wind loads, so that would be the way to go.

If going with a 2x built up ridge beam here is the chart on size, span, and post spacing.  It will depend upon the snow load in your area.
