Title: Birch Burl
Post by: kenhill on January 13, 2014, 09:47:00 PM
Does andyone have experience slabbing a birch burl?  It is about 4 feet in diameter and is too heavy for 2 people to pick up.  Should I slice it paralell to the tree trunk or perpendicular?  Was going to use for table tops.
Thanks.
Ken

The grain is going to be wild either way but my guess would be parallel is going to check less. Dry it slow. Which birch? I've got a sweet, black, birch up in the woods with small burls that the top snapped out of this summer. I've been tempted to try to get it out.

I think in our area of Alaska, we have yellow and paper Birch.  They interbreed and this looks like it could be half and half.
