Floor joist sizing

The plans I'm working with for the floor joists calls for 2X10" supported every 12'.

I'm wondering if I will have enough support if I use 2X8 supported every 6'.
The reason I'm wondering is I can get a super deal on 2X8's from a builder who needs to make payroll.

2X10's have to go upstairs.

Just because something has been done and has not failed, doesn't mean it is good design.

Looks like I can do it and Old Sonny gets to pay the boys! :-/ This is the sad part of our present economy. I've noticed a lot of subs selling tools lately.
