"The Poor Man's SIPS" - a relatively inexpensive way to super insulate a standard wood framed house.
Includes a 1" scaled drawing that can be added to any set of plans to upgrade energy efficiency.
Print this PDF page to review superinsulation techniques and energy strategies. Using a combination of inexpensive cavity insulation with non-structural foam sheathing can greatly upgrade the performance of walls and ceilings. This detail shows interior insulation for cold climates (where a vapor barrier is needed on the interior wall surface). For other areas and especially cooling dominate climates, the foam insulation can be placed on the outside of the wall framing - over the sheathing but under the siding. In many climates the foam can be on either side of the wall and builders do whichever is easier to install. Either way the upgrade to the R-value will be the same.
The detail shows a 2x4 frame wall w/ R-13, you can edit that call-out and substitute a 2x6 frame wall w/R-21 batts for even greater performance. No need to redraw the detail, just add NTS (not to scale) at the end of the modified note.
