Title: 20 X 40 1.5 log cabin - our latest pictures
Post by: chatycady on August 18, 2006, 09:42:49 PM
Here is a couple of pictures. We hope to finally have it all enclosed this weekend. Rain rain go away..... I'm building a cabin today!(https://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j146/chatycady/skylights.jpg)

What a lovely cabin - makes me daydream of lazy days sitting on the porch in a rocking chair reading a good book, watching the grandchildren play...  lightening bugs in the evenings... it just has a good feel to it!  8-)  :)

THanks for the encouragement.
I had a little accident today and ended up in the back of the ambulance and under thx x-ray machine. These projects are fun, but I have to remember I'm 50 not 20! I'm really bummed out, cause it will be awhile before I can get back to work!!! :'( :'( Please everyone take heed,,,,, this is a dangerous occupation,,, and no matter how careful a person is... things happen.

I hope you're doing okay and sorry to hear it.

Kind of a rude awakening being 50, isn't it? I've always thought I could do anything I wanted to until a mower whipped me into a tree. It's a joke now in the family.

"Hey Mom, wanna mow my lawn on Sunday?"

"Nana, you're coming over? Yippee.....just stay away from the lawn, ok?"

LOL ;D

Truly though I was a little depressed after it happened. Made me realize I'm not 20 anymore either........and who the heck would be whipped into a tree? :)

Hope everything is now ok. What happened if you don't mind my asking?

Getting back to your log home - are you using a kit? It's really pretty.

Hi chatycady... I'm,to am so sorry to hear you hurt yourself  :'( - the 'ole body just doesn't recover as well as it used to... we just went to my baby brother's 50th b-day party last night... makes you feel old - was talking to a friend I went to high school with - she has 2 yrs to go until her 40th class reunion, Glenn & I have 3 years...  :o my oh my!  I twisted my knee at Glenn's family reunion a couple weeks ago...   :(

When we 1st started building the cabin, I don't know how many times I slipped on a loose rock or slippery clay mud & down I'd go  :-[ on our steep hills - never broke anything, but had a few scrapes & bruises.  One time I was putting wheelbarrel loads of dirt on a 4:12 pitch part of the roof & raking it.   Glenn was across from me digging with the backhoe.  He said he looked over there & wondered "why is Kathy taking a nap over there?  Or is she just trying to get a tan?"  Then he called over to see if I was ok when he realized I had slipped on the plastic & fallen - I was laid out flat... there was about a 12 ft drop to the ground below about 3-4 feet from where I landed  :o !  I could tell you a lot more stories - seemed like for about 2 yrs there, it didn't matter whether I was at our place in the valley or up at the cabin - if someone was going to hurt themselves, it was me!  :( never seriously, though...  :)

Again, hope you are feeling better - it's so frustrating when you can't do the things you want to do!

At least you got hurt while accomplishing something--though hopefully not too bad?

Earlier this year I was washing dishes while standing on a foam mat.  Dribbled a little dish soap on it, spun around with a dish in my hand, slipped in a SPECTACULAR fall and chipped part of my front
tooth with that stupid dish.  All bruised, hurt my tailbone.  Ice pack on the mouth, felt like a total idiot.

Talked to one of my friends yesterday, a muralist who always works on scaffolding. She tripped on a shoe in her house and broke her foot.  They may need to put in metal pins.

Thanks for all the well wishes.  ::) ::)

I was working on puttin in the basement steps. and  craulwed up the ladder to the main floor when The ladder slipped out from under me, and  I fell 9' and landed on top of the ladder, that's what hurt,  on the baement floor below. Sliced my finger to the bone and broke it,,,, and they found a small hair line fracture in my knee,,,, somewhere. I can still get around as I don't need a cast, but what a bummer. I'll be okay.  But it's hard to sit here with my leg in a brace and the sun is shining,,,, and not raining any more.

:-?

Midern;

No it's not a kit. We got the logs out of Cassville, Wisconsin. I ordered the log seal and log hog screws off the internet. My son-in-law started stacking them one by one.... It's much cheaper than a kit. These are square logs, flat on all sides.

I think we are going to name it Camp Caddy-Du-Wack!

Ouch!  That sounds like it hurt!

Years ago I had climbed up a ladder, I think to get my 4 y/o son out of the tree he had climbed, the ladder wasn't on real even ground... anyway, it fell out from beneath me, I, too, fell on the ladder & rocks around the tree... and I wonder why I have aches & pains & lots of arthritis!  What with sports & all the falls - I had a physical therapist ask me if I'd been a professional wrestler in the past  ;D

I really like the rustic look of that cabin. Heal and drive on! I missed my 40th class reunion this summer. I am in AZ and the reunion was in northern Montana and I just couldn't get away. My cousin attended her 40th last year and she said "Joe, some of those people there were so old....." Go figure. I am 58 going on 100. I need at least that much time just to finish the projects I have started.

About $8400 for the cement and labor.  I am still waiting on the excavation bill, which should be around 2500, so around 10K for the total.

Title: Re: 20 X 40 1.5 log cabin - our latest pictures
Post by: chatycady on August 27, 2006, 07:05:41 PM
Yes, all was hired out, we had to tear down the old fishing cabin, so dismantled everthing in it first, then they pushed it over and burned and carried off a bunch of junk..

There is no additonal footings, etc, needed for a 20X40, so just the basics. Plus we had an existing septic and drain field. We will have to have a sewage pump in the basement to pump up to the septic tank, but that is much cheaper than digging a new system.

Hope that helps.

OK, HERE goes more questions. did you uce the footings from the fishing cabin? or let me say what I think you did then you can correct me.
i think you had a fishing cabin that you tore down, had all foundation footings walls remved. Then had it excavated so that you would have a basement which you did not have on previous. you hired contractor who
poured footings, and contracor using his forms poured basement. please be patient with me thanksMike

You are correct. There were no footings to speak of for the old fishing shack.... It was held up with telephone poles pounded in the ground....

We hired to have it torn down, etc. .... just as you stated.

I'm doing fine. Just can't move as fast, which is frustrating...... but am still working on the cabin. Soon to start plumbing and electrical. Hung the electrical panel Saturday.

( I guess if a person is going to break a leg, the fibula is the bone to break,,, no cast needed, as it's the small bone and the main bone keeps everything in line! - I'm learning some medical terms these days too......) Life is a journey.

Thanks for asking!

You didn't get a cast for that?

Boo, I'm jealous.

I think.

I broke one of those two bones--ended up in a cast for six weeks in June and July.  Working around here, and flying out to the Western Pacific.  The larger dog went to puppy camp (AKA a kennel where they love him) a week early.

It was my introduction to medical care out in the country--I drove myself to the doctor here, then fifty miles to the orthopedist, and between the two didn't get anything in the way of pain pills.  I had some valium left over from a dental experience, which got me through a couple of bad nights.

Are you doing better?? I hope your cast is off and you are fine. I believe your break must have been much worse than mine.

I'm still sore and limp off and on... And yes in the country we don't have specialists... I went to the ER 25 miles from the cabin and saw the DR, who was on call and who drove up from the sounth.... He lives about 100 miles from here....didn't go to "town" to see a specialist. Guess I could have, but just didn't want to take the time........ ;)

Guess my physical therapy is to just keep movin'!

Hope you are back to normal!!

This was five years ago, soon after I moved down here.  I didn't word that right.  :-[

I think I probably moved more confidently with the cast than I would have without it.  And people tended to hold doors for me--that kind of thing.

but it was summer.  And I had a start-to-finish 24 hour plane trip to go through, with at least one slightly too short period of time going from one airline's gate to another.

The guy who put the cast on swore that he'd never seen a tick underneath a cast.  Worked for me.

I'm hoping they don't gang up on Miss Cherty Pie.  She sounds pretty ferocious when she (with her brother from the pen) starts barking and doing their own howl when they start.

Apparently none of ours are pure coyote.  I've heard rumors of Rottweiler/coyotes crosses around.  Not what I'd care to encounter, although Rotties (can and do) do a lot of bluffing.

Here is my husband cleaning the last of the logs, we treated them today, and hopefully before the snow flies we will get a coat of stain on. Electrican still hasn't showed up to get our box fired up. Have some electrical work done, but not juice. It's coming. Tomorrow the dormer siding will go on. We are waiting to put on the fascia board til after the stain.

We've put one coat of stain on the logs, will add second coat next summer. Have the lower level wired and built the platform for the wood stove we purchased.  Wiring has been interesting since we have to chisel out the logs for the boxes and drill through them and pull wires. Hope to post pictures soon.

Am wishing for a digital camera for Christmas!

Thanks for all the encouragment. We couldn't have done it without the 1.5 story plans! The roof line is something I wanted. I got the ideas from looking at pictures on the intranet. I had to do some arm twisting. I agreed to notch the 2X in the roof rafters. John then did the rest,  He has done an excellent job and I'm real pleased! We still have some trim to put up, as you can see. The weather did not cooperate so may have to finish the facia board next spring.

John is my son-in-law, school teacher. This was our project and I've enjoyed every minute of it! ;D

P.S. My leg, arm and finger healed just fine! I was back at it in a couple weeks.

We built the platform for our new wood stove which will arrive next week in time for Christmas. We cut a 6X10 log in half and then stacked them for the base. We then purchased manufactured stone, cut them to fit. The mortar is still wet in this picture.

I am still waiting for the gentlemen who is to blow in the foam insulation...... I seem to be spending a lot of time waiting!

Built the wall for the bathroom/kitchen wall a couple weeks ago.

Eventually the loft joist will be covered with 1/X12's

I got a digital camera for Christmas, so will post more interior pictures. The insulator blew in the foam insulation and it's pretty air tight! Should get the wood burner installed this week, so will be warmer. Here is an updated picture of the exterior. Still have trim work etc, to do. But will wait til warmer weather!

Merry Christmas all and Happy New Year and thanks for all the suggestions, advice and friendly comments. I love this website!

Here's a couple more pictures. Got the wood stove in however it's a little smokey. I imagine we need a taller chimney. Anyone have suggestions? We will have to brace it on the outside. Right now we have about a 5 foot chimney outside. A total of around 12' from top of stove to top of chimney. Do we need more?

Standard is 2 feet above the highest point within a 10 foot radius.  Other conditions can affect that.  If the wind blows against the side of the house that the chimney is on it can create high pressure causing it to want to go into the chimney rather than around the house - any way to the low pressure on the other side.  Getting it taller could get away from that.  Sometimes a different weather cap is necessary - a wind rotated one or vacu-cap may help.

Note that paint on new woodstoves may smoke a bit too until it gets fully cured.

THanks for the info. I don't think we got the stove hot enough and I believe our logs were a little too large. Today we got a good coal bed going and used smaller diameter logs. No smoke, however we are unable to open the doors and use the fire screen, so will extend the pipe another 2 or more feet. Hope that cures the problem. Toasty warm inside, but then it's been real mild here this winter.

Got more plumbing done and hung some recessed lights in the loft. My son helped a bunch this weekend.

Happy New Year All!

Chaty,
You might want to watch the back walls on that wood stove. It doesn't look like you
any protection from the heat and can catch on fire.

Thanks for the concern, however we made sure we were far enough away. We followed all the guidelines set by the manufacturer.  Plus we bought a stove thermometer to make sure we don't overfire. The walls were warm but never hot.

As long as you strictly follow the stove manufacturers guidelines you should be okay. BTW, what is the brand of stove (if you stated it beforem I missed it)   :)

There are ways to further reduce the required clearances but they'd cover up those nice purty logs    :-/

Here's two of the 5 benches my husband made for the cottage.

One pine and one cedar

They seat 4 grandchildren or 3 adult children! Now I've got him thinking about a rustic pine or cedar trestle table.

I agree about watching the fire. That to me is the biggest drawback to wood stoves. I like an open fireplace, however inefficient. That is just me. It needs to be more than just a heating appliance to suit my tastes. That one is very nice.

Yes - you can fiddle with the sticks ( fiddlestix) and even lean over the the fire and inhale. :)

My first priority is to be warm!  ;) Psychologically I am warmer if I can see the fire. Physically I am warmer if I have just cut and carried the wood. Then there is the old Native American addage that says:
Indian builds small fire, stays warm. White man build big fire, stays warm carrying wood.

I always liked the fireplace...
Back home we would always cut up pallets we drug off for free and old windfall fir and spruce off the crown land nearby just to burn in the outside fire burners we made...

Saturday nights sitting around the fire drinking lots of alcohol and having the fire going...

I don't care if I ever go to another dance club....Good beer and some decent company around the fire is all I would ever ask for... for a great saturday night

But yeah I love the woodstoves that have the windows too....

I really want a soapstone stove with the huge window in front...They are nasty expensive... I may have to figure out a way to make one or something...I think they are $5000 :o

BTW the benches look great....The whole cabin is awesome.. You are very lucky... Cabin living would be fantastic

Congrats!

Thanks Ben and Sassy for your kind comments. I guess I don't consider myself lucky, but rather very fortunate. I think we all have dreams and although I can't afford a 2000 sq. foot log home in the mountains, I worked to get a small cabin at a small lake in the hills of Iowa.

As I get older I'm finding I want simplicity with little frills. And I love to see the labor of my own hands. I push paper all day at work and don't really have anything to show for it, but a paycheck. But that paycheck gives me the opportunity to make something that I can be proud of!

Websites like these are a true inspiration! And people who post their projects are even a greater inspiration!

I am still hard at it. The outside went up pretty fast last summer, finishing is slow go.. I'm working every weekend as much as possible, but it's just me now and once in awhile I get help from family. I took the day off today. It was so lovely outside I decided to work on getting some solid steps to the cabin. It's also practice for when I build the loft stairs.

The best I did on a similar project was with one of the little Wagner self contained electric power sprayer.  Not real messy - - no air to mess with - no rollers - no brushes.

Maybe not a real professional tool but it did pretty good.

Did you have to back brush it at all, or just spray and go? I have seen these little units, so may go out and buy one.

Thanks for the info.
Title: Re: 20 X 40 1.5 log cabin - our latest pictures
Post by: glenn-k on July 07, 2007, 08:40:29 PM
The only brushing I did was to straighten out runs if I got it on too thick. So I'd say spray and go.

I noticed some of these said they were for outdoors.  The above model didn't specify as I remember.

Seems I may have seen a ceiling attachment for these - an extension you could bend up - one said they used the can attachment when doing ceilings.

Per these reviews -- ones who could read and follow Wagner directions had a good time with it.  Ones who were incompetant and didn't follow directions hated it.  I had a good time with mine and it did a great job.

Haven't tried the sprayer yet, but will this weekend. Got one with low over spray. More pictures to come.

I took sometime off around Christmas and then it snows and snows and was really cold. I must carry everything in, as we don't plow the driveway. Finish work is a lot slower than I thought it would be.

I finished the radiant floor heat first of November. I love the heat. I keep it right at 45 degrees and it is steady. Then I stoke up the woodburner when I come to work.

Here is a pic of my 4 loops. It ain't pretty, but it wasn't difficult to install.

What a beautiful place.  The interior wood is such a great asset.  I like the railing you're installing to the basement.  Being able to see through it so easily keeps it from breaking up all that nice open space.  That was a great idea.  Your floor plan seems extremely comfortable and livable.
Thanks for showing the pictures.

chatycady,

I am really interested in your radiant floor heating system.  Could you provide some more information on the install?  Looks like you are using your water heater to provide the heat.  is it a closed system or an open system?  Do you have any more pictures of the tubing install.

By the way the Cabin looks Great!

Chuck - unfortunately I didn't take pictures as I went. I did alot of the pex install myself. I bought the radiant panel (open system) at the local home store. It came with good instructions. It allows for 4 loops. I then bought 4 250' rolls of pex. That way I didn't have to measure as each loop needs to be about the same length. Some of mine are a little over 250 and some just under. Loops shouldn't be more than 300' for this system. Splicing was extremely easy.

The hardest part is working above my head, pulling the pex through the floor joists. (woman have no upper arm strength!) Plus I'm short, so meant up and down the ladder a lot! The furthest loop from the panel was the hardest, but I sweet talked my husband into helping with it. (He thinks I'm nuts!) d* d*

I borrowed the crimping tool from my friendly plumber. That was very easy to do. Then used the staple gun with big plastic staples to staple it up to the underlayment. I did not use the aluminum transfer plates. I did staple foil bubble wrap over the pex (1" air space) then finished it off with R15 insulation.

I wish I had used pex for the water pipes. It's much easier to manuever than copper and I'm not likey to start fires!

The water heater is an LP 50 gallon  AO Smith - power vent.  I love the system. There are no drafts and I don't hear a thing when it's working.

Sassy - This is our weekend cabin. It's too far from my work.  I want to retire here, but my husband won't move off the farm! So when I finish this, it will be chaty's quilting shack. (i love quilting too)

chatycady,

Thanks for the information.  Just a few more questions..

Did you run tubing under the loft floor?

What spacing did you use in the joist bays?

Did you use 1/2" pex?

Do you think the bubble wrap is sufficiant to transfer the heat?  or do you think you would add transfer plates if you did it all over again?

I have already run the pex in my basement slab, but I am trying to decide if I need to install it under my first floor decking or not. (building the 2 story universal with a full basement) I definately will put tubing under the second story floor decking.  I have been wondering if there will be enough heat rising to skip the first floor.

Chuck,

Did you run tubing under the loft floor?    No it's warm, granted not as warm as the main floor.

What spacing did you use in the joist bays?  Once down and back in each bay. No real spacing. I skipped the bays next to the outside walls and stayed about a foot in from each exterior wall -  Less heat loss - is what I read.  Also I didn't put any pex under the toilet, kitchen cupboards, or refrig.

Did you use 1/2" pex?  Yes

Do you think the bubble wrap is sufficiant to transfer the heat?  Yes it is.

or do you think you would add transfer plates if you did it all over again? No.

I read that transfer plates aren't necessary and actually cause noise. The bays get really warm above the insulation. Actually I only put the bubble wrap on 1/2 of the floor as I didn't think of it til later.  I can't tell the difference, its all warm.

I didn't put radiant in the cement basement floor. I will put some wall radiators in when I finish the basement. I left room enough to add two. Our main source of heat will be a fireplace.

I think I would put the radiant floor heat in your main floor. Radiant heat heats objects it touches, it doesn't heat the air, so would think your main floor would be pretty cold. When I determined what system I needed I figured the loft as if it were an open vaulted ceiling.

You might get by putting just one run in each bay, on both the first and second floor. Just a thought. But you will have cut the surface area that is heated in half. Same reason I wouldn't use 1" pex either. Just my thought. (Remember I'm not an expert, just a wanna-be know it all! ) :)

Hope this helps. So have you posted your project?

Thanks for the response, some very useful information.  It looks like I will run radiant tubing under all the floors and maybe skip the transfer plates, which will save some $$.

I have posted my project, just haven't updated it lately as we are just doing little things here and there.  The weather hasn't been cooperating.  The last 3 or 4 weekends have been cold -10 to -20 and we do not have any insulation in yet as we still need to install most of the windows and siding.

here is the link to our family project.

Last month I put the final coats of stain on the cabin and then I built the hand rail on the steps.

John came by and put up the trim around the roof, we rented a lift - I think I rented one that was way too big!

THe roof really isn't purple. Its a reddish brown -

I also found an old clawfoot tub, that I refinished. Lots of scouring, sanding and resanding. I love it! Afer a hard days work, I fill it with bubbles. I think I deserve it.

This past week I took some time off and went to visit family in Nebraska and Colorado. Did some hiking in the mountains. This is me!

These past two years have been very rewarding. I love this website and check in often to see how everyone's projects are progressing. Lots of talent here!

Looking great.  Better too big on the lift than too small.

Thanks for the update on your project.

chatycady I would say from the trees near the house that the longer lift would come in handy reaching from one end to the other where the trees would prohibit you from manuvering the lift through them.

Glad to see the white frame window on the log house.  I had my reservations about going with white but were 1/3 the cost of brown or green finishes.  I have already forgotten about them now and have moved onto something else to worry about.

When I see a new log home I am glad that mine is old logs as I do not have to be as picky with my trim work. More rustic the better.

Nice looking place.

I would love to build an authentic log home, but that is much more labor intensive. I don't know how to run a chain saw and  I don't think I have the stength to hang onto one!

I have always liked white windows - It's a personal choice. I looked at a lot of cabins with green and tan trim, but I decided to use white and tie it together with the white facia board. White is clean and bright.
I also used white electrical outlets and switches - white appliances and white bathroom fixtures. Never cared for almond color.

hi chatycady,

being a somewhat new member here i just ran across your post and went back through your project from the start. very nice! i was wondering if you could give me the name or site of the place you got the logs? i know you mentioned it but i could not find them. i am leaning towards the 1.5 plan and never really considered using logs because i did not think i could afford them even though i love log cabins. thanx for all the great ideas!

I got them from Mike Udelhoven in Cassville, WI. I ordered them over the phone. I believe he has a website for the furniture he makes. Google Unigue Creations in Cassville WI. I think you will find him. Or google his name. That's how I located him. I had to pay around $400 for trucking them to the site.

Isn't there such great ideas here on this website? I love little cottages.

Give me an honest answer.  With the old logs as on mine do they really stand out that much? Just thought I would ask but they are there to stay.

On the recepticles I am trying to find some grey recepticles and plates as all the boxes in the log portion are mounted in the chink joint which is mortar.  All others in the Board & Batten room and lofts will be in wood or drywall so the color of the surface will dictate the plate and switches.  Maybe brown in the wood portion and white on the drywall.  As for the appliances I have white toilets and pedestal sinks for the master and loft bathrooms.  Undecided with the kitchen.  White or stainless.

I love the chinking on "real" log homes. I don't have that in mine. Again it's much more labor intensive. But nothing can beat real wood logs and light color chinking. If it were my decision I would use white switch plates to match the chinking and your white windows. But you have to live with it! We lived in a house with the receptacle of off white and plate covers of another color of off white. I could never match the receptacle color - must have been a discountinued color. It bothered me the 10 years I lived there! It was a brand new home and the builder would not fix them. Now I could change them myself!

Here are some pictures of the framing as we went.

I looked at your pictures again - and yes I think the chinking (mortar) and old logs stand out. The stone adds a lot too! That front door is awesome!

Wouldn't it be fun to tour the country and see all these cottages in person? An annual Open House across the country. Kind of like they do around here with old restored barns, or quilt patches painted on the barns.

Just a thought. People could register there cottages on line. ......

hi chatycady,
thanx for the info on the logs. i will contact them. now looking at these new(?) photos, is there some sort of gasket material between the logs or caulking? just luv the way you did this and i will definitly be using some of your ideas(along w/a million others from this forum :)).

Yes there is a gasket between the logs. We ran two on each log and between joints and then used "Log Hog" screws to tie them together.

Bought both off the internet. I shopped around until I found the best prices on both.

Foam Gaskets

FOAMSEAL manufactures a comprehensive line of custom engineered PVC (PolyvinylChloride) Foam & Foam Tapes to provide an economical solution to your most demanding sealing and cushioning requirements.

Oly Log Hog Screws
Similar to the Oly log screws with larger 15/64" shank and larger 5/16" hex head.
Made of heat treated steel for increased strength and drivability.
Coated for corrosion resistance.
Gimlet point for fast drilling.
These come with 3" of thread at the tip. (threaded area has 5/16" of major diameter).

Best to install using high torque, low RPM 1/2" electric drill.
To allow for settling, sink head of screw a minimum of 1/4" below surface of log.
Use with larger diameter Milled log and Handcrafted logs and locations that may need additional seismic or wind engineering.

If you're talking indoor faceplates, I have had good luck painting them. Just scuff them with some sandpaper, spray them with primer made for plastic and have fun.  I then put a sealer over them.  You can have them any color you want.  I had them in a house when the boys were in the 6-12 yr d range and had no problems with the paint coming off.

Thanks Judy.  I had thought about that but the recepticles and the switches need to match the plates.  In fact I will be painting two. One for the outside recepticle on the porch and the other is above the mantle.  It is in the stone wall and fireplace.  I will find some fleck stone paint or just try to make it blend in with the rock. Outside will be a door covered outside recepticle and the other is a duplex and TV/Telephone.
